Liverpool, like any other smart club, are always seeking a bargain in the transfer market. Andy Robertson's £8 million move from Hull City is always held up as the gold standard, considering he would go on to make 378 appearances for the club. Well, when they attempted to replicate this with another Scottish full-back, it did pan out quite as well.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Calvin Ramsay has agreed to join Scottish Premiership side St Mirren on a season-long loan. Considering that the 23 year old's contract at Liverpool also expires next summer, unless the plan is for him to sign a new one, this will signal the end of his career on Merseyside. So, how did we get to this point?

As a teenager, Ramsay burst onto the scene at Aberdeen, racking up nine assists in 39 outings for the Dons, generally impressing all onlookers at Pittodrie. This convinced Liverpool to pay £4.2 million for his signature back in 2022, a fee that could've risen to £6.5 million, which, at the time, was Aberdeen's record sale, since surpassed by Bojan Miovski.

However, he has never been able to replicate that form in a Liverpool shirt. The Scotsman has made just four senior appearances for the Reds, totalling a miserly 184 minutes, spread over four years.

Calvin Ramsay's senior Liverpool appearances

1 November 2022: Napoli - UEFA Champions League. 4 minutes off the bench.

9 November 2022: Derby County - EFL Cup. Played the full 90.

29 October 2025: Crystal Palace - EFL Cup. Played the full 90.

16 February 2026: Brighton & Hove Albion - FA Cup. 1 minute off the bench.

Ramsay's only two starts for the Reds have both came in the Carabao Cup, never making a Premier League appearance. During this period, he has been loaned out to Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Kilmarnock, but has made just 26 appearances for those four clubs combined due to various injury issues.

Well, the arrival of Andoni Iraola had seemingly opened the door for Ramsay to stay at Liverpool. The 23 year old featured in all five pre-season matches, including bagging this assist for Federico Chiesa against Sunderland in Tennessee.

He then started when the Reds beat Wrexham at Yankee Stadium, before enjoying cameos off the bench against Leeds and Monaco, seeing an hour of the behind-closed-doors draw with Como on Sunday.

That though will surely be the last time we see Ramsay in a Liverpool kit. St Mirren do not have a game this weekend, so he'll be hoping to debut for the Buddies when Motherwell visit Paisley to take on Craig McLeish's team on Sunday 30 August.
