It was an unsuccessful evening for Stags at the One Call Stadium as Manchester City U21s enjoyed a 4-1 win to kick off their EFL Trophy campaign.
Two goals from Xavier Parker in the 23rd and 28th minute put Stags on the backfoot before Tyrone Samba made it 3-0 going into half-time. Kylan Midwood scored City’s fourth late in the second half and Regan Hendry rounded off the night with a consolation goal for Mansfield Town.
Ultimately, numerous missed opportunities cost Stags a result, which Nigel Clough touched on after the match. But after their win over Doncaster Rovers, the manager admitted he was pleased this defeat came in a Cup game and not League One.
