Arsenal vs Coventry City: Premier League Preview, Gameweek 1, 2026/27

The Premier League is back, with the 2026/27 season getting underway in late August, following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the opening fixture involves two teams who had success last season.
Arsenal are set to host Coventry City on Friday night at the Emirates Stadium, with the hosts going into this campaign as the reigning Premier League champions, and the visitors returning to the top-flight after 25 years following their title-winning season in the Championship.
This match also sees the clash of two very well-known central midfielders in the Premier League, with Mikel Arteta and Frank Lampard watching on from the opposing dugouts for the first time since May 2023, when Lampard was in charge of Chelsea during his second stint with the club.

Team news
Arsenal:
The big team news for Arsenal revolves around two of their star players - Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.
Both players were named on the bench for Arsenal's Community Shield triumph against Manchester City last Sunday, with Rice coming on for the entirety of the second half, and Saka playing around 30 minutes.
The pair represented England at the World Cup, and played their part throughout the tournament, particuarly Rice who started the majority of England's matches, and both came into that tournament with injury issues.

With the pair given time off following their summer in North America, they have seen limited minutes heading into the league season, and there are question marks over their involvement on Friday night, with the likes of Bruno Guimar ã es and Myles Lewis-Skelly expected to fill in for Rice, and Noni Madueke the obvious replacement for Saka on the right wing.
Other news sees defensive duo Jurrien Timber and William Saliba declared unfit to start through injury.
Coventry City:
For the Premier League new boys, there are some injury and fitness concerns.
Both Haji Wright and Luke Woolfenden have been ruled out of Friday's contest, with Wright, who was a key part of Coventry's starting XI last season, set to miss the first part of this campaign with a quad injury.

Frank Onyeka and Jack Rudoni are doubts for Friday following fitness concerns, with Onyeka the more likely of the pair to be ready in time to feature.
The potential absence of Onyeka and Rudoni could see the likes of Matt Grimes and Victor Torp step in alongside club-record signing Caleb Yirenkyi.

After signing from Club Brugge for £34m in July, Christos Tzolis has made an immediate impact in an Arsenal shirt.

Starting in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Man City in the Community Shield, Tzolis assisted twice, including a strong header across goal to find Kai Havertz for the second of Arsenal's three goals.
Tzolis managed 17 goals and 23 assists in the Jupiler Pro League last season, and the sky is the limit for the 24-year-old who is expected to play against Coventry and provide a serious threat to a defence which is entirely brand new to the Premier League.
Coventry - Caleb Yirenkyi
Following his arrival earlier in August for a club-record fee of £23.1m, Caleb Yirenkyi has plenty to prove at the top level, but could be key if the Sky Blues are to get anything from this encounter.

Known for his ball-recovery and progresssive passes, anything Coventry do going forward is likely to go through Yirenkyi.
The question is, can the 20-year-old remain calm against such strong opposition and be the figurehead to a side that will not see much of the ball, and will have limited chances?
