Chelsea Predictions: Opta Supercomputer’s Projections for Premier League 2026-27
Can Chelsea get back to challenging for the Premier League title now that Xabi Alonso is their manager? We look at the Opta supercomputer’s pre-season predictions.
Chelsea ended 2025-26 with a thoroughly disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League, ending level on points with west London rivals Fulham and, more damningly, 33 points behind title-winners Arsenal. It was especially poor from the Blues after they came into the season having won the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
But a new manager has come in and lifted hopes of a revival in 2026-27. Xabi Alonso had a turbulent time at Real Madrid, lasting just seven months at the Spanish giants before being sacked. But before that, he guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first ever Bundesliga title in Germany back in 2023-24, and did so with an exciting brand of football, becoming the first team to go unbeaten across an entire Bundesliga season.
Chelsea haven’t won the Premier League title since 2016-17, back when Antonio Conte was in charge. They haven’t even managed a top-two finish since then. So, what gives 2026-27 the potential to be different?
Ahead of the opening weekend of action in the competition, we look at the Opta supercomputer’s pre-season projections for Chelsea in the 2026-27 Premier League.

Likelihood of a Top-Four Finish: 23.7%
Considering it’s now 10 seasons since Chelsea were last crowned Premier League champions, there’s not much expectation that Alonso can turn things around so quick that they are considered strong title contenders this time around.
That doesn’t mean that there isn’t some hope, though. The Opta supercomputer saw them lift the Premier League title in 3.8% of its 10,000 pre-season simulations. But to calm expectations a little, it also saw them relegated more often than winning the league (6.0%).
Much of that is down to Chelsea’s poor league performance last season, though. The supercomputer’s confidence would increase a fair bit if Chelsea can start the Premier League season well this time around.

Arsenal (40.6%), Manchester City (19.6%), Liverpool (9.2%), Manchester United (6.6%) and Aston Villa (4.4%) all won the Premier League title more often than Chelsea in the current season sims by the Opta supercomputer, but the expectation from most Blues supporters will be that this is more of a long-term project for Alonso.
UEFA Champions League qualification is important for the club, who have no European football to play this season. The supercomputer saw them finish inside the top four places across 23.7% of its simulations.
But as we have learned from the last two seasons, should English clubs perform well in Europe and earn enough coefficient points, then fifth place could also secure UCL action next term. Chelsea finished inside the top five places in 30.8% of the supercomputer’s simulations, but a sixth-place finish (7.2%) is deemed the most likely.
