Chelsea’s own squad remains packed with senior options in the Premier League, which makes clear pathways like this one essential for younger players to gain regular minutes.
Reggie Walsh made his first team debut at just 16, coming on against Djurgarden in the UEFA Conference League. That moment made him the third youngest player to feature for Chelsea’s first team. Wigan Athletic play their football in League One and hope his energy can boost their midfield this season.

Following in Reece James’ footsteps
Walsh is not the first Chelsea academy player to head to Wigan for senior experience. Reece James also spent time on loan at Wigan back in 2018, making 43 appearances before returning to Stamford Bridge. James has since become a regular fixture in Chelsea’s Premier League squad and has represented England at senior international level, showing exactly the ceiling this pathway can offer. Wigan have built a reputation for giving young loanees real minutes rather than a place on the bench.
Speaking to Latics TV, Walsh said, “I can’t wait to get started.”He explained that playing men’s football at 17 feels like the right stepping stone for his career. Walsh also said he believes Wigan offers the environment he needs to develop under regular first team pressure.
What this loan means for Chelsea’s academy pathway
Chelsea’s academy has built a clear pathway for sending young players out on loan, with names like Levi Colwill and Ian Maatsen following that route before becoming first team regulars. Many academy graduates use time away from Stamford Bridge to sharpen their game before returning. Walsh has played mainly as a central midfielder through Chelsea’s youth setup, and that is the role he is expected to fill at Wigan.
