Chelsea make ruthless Sarr call 14 months into eight-year deal

Chelsea are now prepared to sell Mamadou Sarr permanently in a major change of direction just 14 months after handing the highly-rated defender an eight-year contract.

Sarr had previously been expected to leave Stamford Bridge temporarily, with Real Sociedad among the clubs exploring a loan for the 20-year-old.

That position has now changed.

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri reports that Chelsea have placed Sarr on the transfer market and are prepared to sanction a permanent departure.

Talks are already ongoing, although the Senegal international is understood to be unwilling to simply accept any project offered to him.

Mamadou Sarr Chelsea plan changes dramatically

The decision is particularly striking given how recently Chelsea committed to Sarr.

Chelsea paid Strasbourg around £12million for the centre-back in June 2025 and handed him a contract running until 2033.

He subsequently returned to Strasbourg on loan before being recalled midway through last season, and has since had opportunities to impress at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had appeared determined to continue his development rather than cash in.

ReadChelsea reported last month that a Premier League loan was considered the most likely outcome, with Sarr expected to hold talks with Xabi Alonso over his immediate role.

Permanent departure is now on the table instead.

Chelsea’s crowded defensive picture offers some explanation.

Axel Disasi is also closing in on another move away from Stamford Bridge, while Aston Villa have emerged as suitors for Tosin Adarabioyo.

Maxence Lacroix’s arrival has increased the competition further as Alonso attempts to settle on a smaller defensive group.

Sarr remains only 20 and is tied to Chelsea for another seven years, so there is little contractual pressure to sell cheaply.

His potential permanent exit instead suggests Chelsea are prepared to make an early judgement on his pathway if the right proposal arrives.

A loan once appeared to be the obvious next step.

Chelsea are now willing to make the separation permanent.
