Newcastle vs Liverpool odds suggest one kind of game at St James’ Park

Liverpool open their 2026-27 Premier League season against Newcastle United at St. James' Park, and the betting odds say that it could end up being a goal frenzy

Andoni Iraola will make his competitive debut as Liverpool manager against Newcastle United in Matchweek 1 of the 2026-27 Premier League season.

Liverpool will be expected to start the new campaign in winning fashion against a Newcastle side that was gutted of several key players this summer and lost manager Eddie Howe on July 30, just three weeks out from the start of the season.

Even though the Reds have yet to make a big splash this summer transfer window, Iraola enters the opening match of the season with a relatively healthy squad, including Alexander Isak, who will lead the line against his former club this Sunday at St. James’ Park.

Oddsmakers rate Liverpool as clear favorites to win the match, with -110 odds on the 3-way moneyline. The home team is +300 to emerge with three points, while a draw is priced at +280.

Perhaps a better indication of how the fixture might play out are the odds attached to how many goals will be scored in the game.

There are -225 odds for both teams to score in the match, which equates to roughly a 70 percent chance that both Liverpool and Newcastle will find the back of the net in the 90 minutes.

There are +120 odds for over 3.5 goals to be scored, while the chances of five or more goals being scored has +275 odds, a price that is somewhat atypical for a Premier League game.

The possibility of goals flying in at both ends may come as no surprise given Iraola’s attack-focused style of play and Liverpool’s current defensive shortcomings.

Wing-backs Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong still have much to prove after disappointing seasons last term, and it remains to be seen which new center back signing, Jeremy Jacquet or Ronald Araujo, gets the start alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Fans will remember last season’s opener, which Liverpool won 4-2 over Iraola’s Bournemouth thanks to Federico Chiesa’s late heroics, and hope for a more stable defensive performance this time around to settle the mood.

According to the odds, though, Reds supporters could very well be in for a similar experience in which their team concedes one or more goals before ultimately finding a way to secure three points.

Isak (-105 to score) is the favorite in the anytime goalscorer betting market, followed by Cody Gakpo (+162), Florian Wirtz (+240), and Domink Szoboszlai (+275). Nick Woltemade has the shortest odds of any Newcastle player to find the net at +200.
