Viktor Gyokeres will enjoy a touching reunion with Coventry City in their return to the Premier League

Viktor Gyokeres hailed the family atmosphere at Coventry City as a key reason for his goalscoring improvement.
The Arsenal striker will stand opposite his former club on Friday when the Sky Blues take on the reigning league champions in their first Premier League match since 2001. Gyokeres, 28, spent two-and-a-half years with Coventry before his move to Sporting CP.
His stint with the then-Championship side was a major catalyst for the Swede's career, following an initially tough start to life at the Coventry Building Society Arena. He spent the first half of the 2020/21 campaign on loan to Swansea City from Brighton but failed to score in 11 league games.
The Seagulls then sent him to Coventry for the rest of the season, where he netted just three goals in 19 games. Despite the disappointing goal return, the Sky Blues signed him permanently on a three-year deal.
Gyokeres' potency in front of goal transformed soon after, as he scored 18 goals in 47 games in his first full season at Coventry, before netting 22 goals in 50 games ahead of his transfer to Sporting CP.
The striker cited the warm environment at the club and the faith his former boss, Mark Robins, had in him as the main reasons he established himself as a reliable goalscorer. He previously told L’Equipe: "After three loans, finally being truly part of a club changed everything.

"I felt things differently, I arrived in pre-season with a different mindset. Even though my loan hadn't been a resounding success, I felt that the club really wanted me.
"I needed that. The coach wanted to keep me because he saw something in me. I wanted to show him, and the club, that they hadn't made a mistake." Gyokeres went on to have a prolific spell with the Portuguese giants, scoring 97 goals in just 102 games.

Gyokeres could be in line to feature against his former side on Friday, which also marks Coventry boss Frank Lampard's return to top-flight. Lampard, 48, last managed in the Premier League in a caretaker role for Chelsea in 2023.
He opted to drop down a division when joining Coventry in 2024, but has since masterminded their promotion and admitted he now understands himself better as a coach. Speaking to SB Nation, he said: "One specific thing is my own way of finding my personal balance with things, not being too reactionary to things because this job gives you so many little things to solve during the week.

"I think I understand myself better now with how I want to coach. I feel true to myself, not trying to be anything I’m not. When we’re having tough times, I try to be the one with the cool head. When we’re winning lots of games, I try to be the one with the cool head. I think I feel more comfortable within myself in this role and I’m as hungry as ever."
