Liverpool legend Phil Thompson thinks his former club should consider making a move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.
Speaking on the Footy Accumulators podcast, No Tippy Tappy Football, Thompson said he was surprised that the Reds or another club haven’t signed him already:
“Adam Wharton is a player that I would be interested in signing for Liverpool. I can’t understand why nobody, in all this transfer merry-go-round, has picked him up this summer.”
“He is one that you talk about in terms of having good character. At a football club, besides talent, you need people of good sort, and I’ve always looked at Wharton and thought he’s a good character.”
“I think he’s probably the next player Crystal Palace will have to sell, because they have to sell one a year for big money.”
Why hasn’t Wharton moved teams?
The 22-year-old has attracted plenty of interest. As well as being on Liverpool’s radar, he is reportedly a long-term target for both Chelsea and Manchester United.
However, it looks like Crystal Palace have made it clear to potential suitors that Wharton will not be sold this summer. It has been reported by The Athletic that Manchester City have had a formal enquiry knocked back for the player in recent days.
Could Liverpool target him after Jones’s departure?
With Curtis Jones set to seal a £30m move to Serie A champions Inter Milan, there is a debate over whether Andoni Iraola’s side will go into the transfer market for his replacement before the window closes.
Trey Nyoni has looked impressive in pre-season, and it could well be the case that the club want to leave a pathway open for the teenager, rather than blocking his development by signing Wharton, who would likely cost in excess of £100m.
