Cundy brands Everton“makeweights” of the Premier League

Jason Cundy has taken aim at Everton again, telling talkSPORT listeners the club “don’t do anything” and just “hang around” in the Premier League.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard this from Cundy and his talkSPORT colleagues.

He’s built a career on hot takes about clubs he clearly hasn’t watched very closely, and Everton keep ending up in his firing line. This time, the “makeweights” line doesn’t necessarily hold up against what’s actually gone on at the Hill Dickinson over the past 18 months, given the context around the club’s financial struggles.

TFG have given the club a significant lift since taking over from Moshiri, and while things are yert dar from perfect, have overseen the move into a new 52,888-capacity stadium, and this summer has brought in five permanent signings — Christian Nørgaard, Hayden Hackney and Brennan Johnson among them — with talks now underway for Chelsea’s Liam Delap.

None of that squares with “hanging around.” Not really.

The club is not where it wants to be but is clearly, against a difficult backdrop, making progress.

This isn’t the first time a talkSPORT pundit has gone after Everton in an ill-informed and shouty tone – it’s what they do – and I doubt it’ll be the last.

Cundy – Trophies won – zero

Cundy has previous for this kind of sweeping, under-cooked criticism — Cardiff City and his own former club Chelsea have both had the same treatment, among many others.

I should also point out that Cundy’s own playing career — Chelsea, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Bristol City, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth — never produced a single major senior trophy or title. Worth bearing in mind before he lectures anyone about being ‘makeweights’.

Makeweight: a person or thing of little value added simply to make up the required weight, number, or quantity.

We see you, Jason.

Everton’s answer, as always, needs to come on the pitch. A strong start against Crystal Palace this weekend would do more to shut him up than any response on a website.
