Lincoln City could move for Manchester United striker Ethan Wheatley after Everton’s decision to drop their interest, according to the Daily Mail.
Lincoln City are being linked with a swoop for the Premier League attacker as they eye more reinforcements before the end of the transfer window. They have until the deadline on Tuesday 1st September to complete any final incoming or outgoing bits of business.
Wheatley, 20, is under contract at Old Trafford until June 2028 but he may leave the Red Devils this summer amid attention from elsewhere. He spent the second-half of last season out on loan in League One with Bradford City but didn’t score in 12 games for the Bantams in all competitions.
Championship Roundup
In this latest update regarding his situation, the Daily Mail claim Everton have pulled the plug on a potential deal for the Stockport-born man which could open the door for the Imps to swoop in now. They were beaten 2-1 away at Middlesbrough last weekend in their first Championship outing of the new campaign.
Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw’s side are back in action on Saturday as they aim to bounce back from their defeat the Riverside Stadium. They face Portsmouth at home.
Lincoln City eyeing more firepower amid Ethan Wheatley interest
Lincoln City could see Manchester United prospect Wheatley as someone to boost their attacking department. They would benefit from more competition and depth up top.
If the youngster joined the Imps, he would give them more competition and depth going forward. He could battle it out with the likes of Freddie Draper, Rob Street, Ben House and Isaac Olaofe for a place in their starting XI.
James Collins remains out injured so they could do with some additional cover. Although still young, Wheatley has capacity to grow and develop down the line.
The ex-England youth international is unlikely to break into Manchester United’s first-team anytime soon. Therefore, another departure and change of scene would do him good.

The Verdict: Ethan Wheatley could be shrewd addition by Lincoln City, despite young age
The fact Everton have considered luring Wheatley to Merseyside from Manchester United shows he is a promising talent. He would be a solid acquisition for the future by Lincoln City if they managed to get a deal over the line.
Wheatley has risen up through the academy ranks of the Red Devils and has been a regular for them at various different youth levels. He has played four times for their senior team to date and as well as Bradford City, he has also been shipped out on loan to Walsall and Northampton Town in the past.
