Chelsea midfielder Vera Jones has completed a season-long loan move to Women’s Super League 2 side Watford as the highly rated youngster looks to continue her development through regular senior football.
The 18-year-old has committed her long-term future to Chelsea after recently signing a new contract with the Blues until at least 2029. The decision to send her out on loan again underlines the club’s belief that valuable first-team experience is the next stage of her development.
Jones spent the 2025/26 campaign with Bristol City in WSL2, making 22 appearances, including five starts. She was regularly introduced from the bench, giving her an important introduction to the demands and physicality of senior football.
Now, Watford represents another opportunity for Jones to take that experience to another level.
The attacking midfielder is capable of operating in several positions and has already built an impressive international background with England’s youth teams. She made her Under-17 debut in 2023, featured at the European Championship at that level and was part of the England squad that finished fourth at the 2024 Under-17 World Cup. She has subsequently progressed into the Under-19 and Under-20 set-ups.
In my view, this is an excellent move for both Jones and Chelsea.
At this stage of her career, regular football is arguably more important than simply being part of a star-studded CHELSEA squad. Competition for places at Stamford Bridge is fierce, and sitting on the bench or playing limited minutes would not provide Jones with the consistent experience she needs.
Watford should give her the opportunity to play more regularly, take greater responsibility and develop her decision-making in competitive matches. Having already experienced WSL2 with Bristol City, she should also arrive better prepared for the demands of the division.
The move could therefore prove extremely valuable when Jones eventually returns to Chelsea. Another season of senior football could help her become stronger, more confident and better equipped to challenge for a place in the Blues’ first team.
For CHELSEA , the fact Jones has signed a contract through 2029 before heading out on loan is also significant. It demonstrates that the club continues to see a long-term future for the midfielder.
