Grand Bahamian Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Jonquel ‘JJ’ Jones suffered an apparent ankle injury in the New York Liberty’s loss to the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday.
Jones went down at the 3:31 mark of the first quarter. She immediately grabbed her left ankle before being helped to the locker room by her teammates and ultimately never returned to the game.
Prior to the injury, Jones scored five points, dished out two assists and made both of her field goal attempts in just six minutes of action.
As for the Liberty, the team went on to lose the matchup, 93-86, and is in danger of slipping further in the WNBA Standings.
Jones’ loss comes at a critical time for the Liberty.
Prior to the loss to Chicago, New York had won six out of seven and nine of their previous 11 matchups.
Jones was impressive in the Liberty’s previous game against the Connecticut Sun, in which she erupted for a game-high 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and picked up two assists in 35 minutes of action.
The Liberty have yet to diagnose Jones’ injury. Head Coach Chris DeMarco said she would be evaluated over the next few days to determine the status of the injury.
Jones has had a complicated history with ankle injuries. She missed time with a right ankle injury twice last season, one of which required her to miss four to six weeks.
Additionally, during the 2025 offseason, Jones underwent ankle surgery.
As previously mentioned, her latest injury occurred to her left ankle.
While the Libs continue to make their push for the 2026 WNBA Playoffs, the 2024 WNBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) is averaging 14.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from long range.
New York has seven games remaining on the schedule before the start of the 2026 WNBA Playoffs.
The Liberty own a 22-15 win/loss record, good for seventh place overall in the league.
The team will return to action against the Indiana Fever on Saturday at 7 p.m. The game will be played at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
