Chelsea midfielder Reggie Walsh will spend the 2026/27 season on loan at League One side Wigan Athletic as the highly-rated teenager takes the next step in his development through regular senior football.
Chelsea have confirmed that the 17-year-old has joined Wigan for the campaign after making a rapid rise through the club’s academy ranks. Walsh joined the Blues at Under-8 level and has developed into one of the most promising young midfielders at Stamford Bridge.
The teenager has already gained valuable exposure to first-team football. He became Chelsea’s third-youngest senior player when he made his debut against Djurgarden in the UEFA Conference League at just 16 years and 193 days old. He subsequently became the club’s youngest player to appear in the Champions League when he featured against Ajax last season.
Walsh was also an important member of Chelsea’s successful academy sides last season. He made 27 Premier League 2 appearances as the Under-21s finished top of the regular-season table, while he also helped the Under-18s win the national championship with victory over Manchester City.
He then travelled with Xabi Alonso’s senior squad during CHELSEA‘s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, gaining further experience around the first team before the decision was made to send him out on loan.
Wigan’s move for Walsh is designed to give him something Chelsea cannot guarantee at this stage: consistent men’s football.
Why this is a great move for Walsh
In my opinion, this is exactly the type of loan Chelsea should be making with one of their most promising young players.
Walsh has already demonstrated that he can compete at academy level and has experienced the excitement of playing for CHELSEA‘s first team. The next challenge is proving that he can handle the physicality, intensity and consistency required to play senior football every week.
League One should provide an excellent environment for that development. Rather than spending another season predominantly playing youth football or waiting for occasional first-team opportunities, Walsh can now experience the pressures of competing for points, dealing with experienced opponents and performing when matches are difficult.
