Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has been named as the club's new vice-captain, but manager Andoni Iraola confirmed he will not wear the armband on the pitch during matches.
Iraola explained that Premier League rules restricting referee discussions solely to team captains make it impractical for a goalkeeper to perform captaincy duties across the entire pitch.
Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai and defender Joe Gomez are expected to wear the armband on the pitch whenever regular captain Virgil van Dijk is not playing.
The reshuffle in Liverpool's leadership group comes after the departures of experienced squad members Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah over the summer transfer window.
Despite the loss of senior figures, Iraola expressed confidence in the squad's younger players stepping up to take on leadership responsibilities ahead of their opening fixture against Newcastle.
