Xabi Alonso has outlined an unusually flexible role for Reece James at Chelsea, with the Blues captain capable of operating in four different positions under the new head coach.
James returned later than many of his team-mates after representing England at the World Cup but is now in contention to start Chelsea’s Premier League opener against Fulham on Monday.
He was used in central midfield during the 3-1 friendly victory over Real Sociedad, providing the clearest indication yet that Alonso does not intend to restrict his captain to right-back.
Chelsea’s official interview with Alonso confirms James could be deployed at right-back, wing-back, in central midfield or centrally within a back three.
Xabi Alonso on whether Enzo Fernandez remains #Chelsea vice-captain:
"Reece [James] is the first captain, and we have other leaders, other personalities that share the same role."

Reece James gives Xabi Alonso four Chelsea options
Alonso believes James’ intelligence and composure allow him to influence Chelsea regardless of where he starts.
The Spaniard also made an interesting admission about managing his captain, explaining that James needs to feel important within the team as well as carrying the responsibility that comes with the armband.
That versatility could become especially valuable within Alonso’s preferred system.
ReadChelsea previously examined how Alonso’s 3-4-2-1 could reshape the side, with the formation placing significant demands on both the wing-backs and players operating around the midfield pivot.
James has the attributes to fill either role.
There is competition on the right from Marco Palestra and Malo Gusto, while Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Jordan Henderson give Alonso several midfield combinations.
Using James centrally could therefore allow Alonso to select another natural wing-back without removing his captain from the side.
Chelsea’s defensive hierarchy is changing too.
ReadChelsea reported on Friday that Alonso has identified Levi Colwill as a major part of his defensive plans while several other centre-backs move closer to Stamford Bridge exits.
James’ ability to operate on the right of a back three provides Alonso with yet another solution.
His exact starting position against Fulham remains uncertain.
His importance does not.
Alonso has made clear that wherever James is deployed, he believes Chelsea become a better side with their captain on the pitch.
