**Andoni Iraola has been speaking to the media ahead of his first Premier League game in charge of Liverpool.**
The Reds kick off their 2026-27 Premier League season with a trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United in what is expected to be an exciting game of football.
In recent weeks, [Cody Gakpo has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-chances-of-72m-attacker-leaving-deemed-quite-high/). The Dutchman has a contract at the club until 2030, but his future remains uncertain due to surprise interest from the Lilywhites.
There have been contrasting reports about him in recent weeks, but [Liverpool value Gakpo at around £72m](https://readliverpoolfc.com/news/liverpool-transfer-news-as-chances-of-72m-attacker-leaving-deemed-quite-high/) and have thus far been unwilling to part with him.
And now, judging by Iraola’s comments on him, it appears as if he is planning for the new season with the Dutchman in his thoughts.
The Spaniard spoke elaborately about Gakpo, suggesting that he could also play as a No.9 to provide cover and competition for Alexander Isak in Hugo Ekitike’s absence.
“I think Cody can play as a 9,” said the Spaniard in his pre-match press conference. Not tried it pre-season because we don’t have enough wingers.
“He knows what we need from him in his preferred position as a left-winger, but I have spoken to him about his minutes as a 9. He’s done it before and he can help us there.”
“Cody is performing well, has been since first day, understanding everything we need.
“You can feel it straight away, he is smart, understands the game. He has been one of our best players in the friendlies, performing well. I cannot tell you the XI, but he is in good shape.”
We’re not taking the boss’ words out of context, but it does appear as if Iraola really wants Gakpo around the squad for the 2026-26 Premier League season.
And to be honest, we can see the value he adds as a central striker and a left winger. Additionally, his contract runs until 2030 and the Reds don’t really need the money, so they are in a fantastic position.
Unless Tottenham make an absolutely outrageous offer, we can’t see Gakpo leaving this summer even if two of Bradley Barcola, Ibrahim Mbaye and Yankuba Minteh are signed.
