Arsenal have held a direct conversation with Atletico Madrid over a potential transfer for Julian Alvarez. The Gunners wanted to understand the terms of any possible deal for the Argentina international, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Atletico’s position remains unchanged and the club continue to insist the player will stay. Barcelona have been waiting on developments but there has been no significant progress. Atletico director Mateo Alemany was in London in recent days discussing various opportunities, including interest in Nicolas Jackson.
Romano said: “Regarding Arsenal and Atlético Madrid, what I’m hearing is that there has also been a direct conversation between Arsenal and Atlético about Julián Álvarez. Arsenal wanted to understand the terms of a potential transfer for Julián Álvarez. So, a conversation did indeed take place.

“Julián Álvarez is a long-standing target for Arsenal. Arsenal was already interested in the player some time ago, when he joined Atlético Madrid. They’ve always appreciated the player. So, the fact that Mikel Arteta likes Julián Álvarez is beyond doubt.
“We need to see what position the player would take, because up until now, the player has never initiated discussions with Arsenal. And then there’s the financial aspect: how much Atlético Madrid wants to sell Julián Álvarez for, because Atlético continues to insist that the player will stay.
“I’m not here to tell you that Julián is 100% joining Arsenal, because that depends on the price and the player’s position. It’s not a simple story, as you can understand, but it’s certainly a file to follow after the contacts that took place in London.”
Supporters will note the continued interest with realism. Any deal would require a significant shift from Atletico and agreement from the player. Further updates are expected if formal progress is made before the window closes.
