Arsenal have completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, with the England defender making his trophy ambitions clear after arriving in North London.
Ezri Konsa has become Arsenal’s latest summer arrival after ending his seven-year stay at Aston Villa to join Mikel Arteta’s Premier League champions.
The England international joins after weeks of negotiations between Arsenal and Villa, with the final fee in the region of £50 million, plus potential add-ons.
The move ends another one of Arsenal’s drawn-out transfer chases this summer and hands Arteta another option at both centre-back and right-back, just as injuries have stretched his defensive resources.
William Saliba is still sidelined after aggravating a back problem with France at the World Cup, while Jurrien Timber continues his recovery from a groin injury.
Arteta made no secret of the Gunners’ need for reinforcements making it clear that Arsenal were still active in the market.
Konsa now arrives as the solution to that search.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is confident the club have brought in a defender ready to make a difference straight away, not just fill a gap while Saliba recovers.
“Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers,” Berta said.
“Being comfortable in both central defence and at right-back, Ezri will bring valuable versatility to our squad while maintaining the high defensive standards which are fundamental to our challenge of winning major trophies.”
Arsenal Finally Land Long-Term Konsa Target
Konsa, may have become Arsenal’s top defensive target late in the window, but the club’s interest in him stretches back much almost a decade.
At 28, he has since grown into an established Premier League defender and England international, spending seven seasons at Villa Park and becoming a key figure under Unai Emery.
His flexibilit is exactly what Arteta looks for, having played plenty of football on the right side of central defence, but is equally comfortable at right-back, where Timber’s absence has left Ben White shouldering much of the early-season workload.
Cristhian Mosquera caught the eye alongside Gabriel Magalhaes in the 3-0 Community Shield win over Manchester City, so Arsenal have not been short of options. Konsa, though, gives Arteta another defender he can trust straight away, without needing to shuffle players out of position.
Konsa also brings a physical presence that looks a natural fit for the way Arsenal want to play.
Konsa sees this as a role that plays to his strengths. When asked what excites him most about working with Arteta, he was quick to mention the defensive side of the job.
“Defending,” Konsa said. “I know he loves defenders who can really defend and defenders who are calm on the ball. His style suits me so I can't wait to get going.”
Konsa Adds Proven Depth to Arsenal Defence
The bigger challenge for Konsa will come when everyone is fit and fighting for places.
Saliba and Gabriel remain Arteta’s go-to centre-back pairing, with Timber and White offering strong options on the right. Mosquera’s emergence only adds to the competition.
Konsa, though, joins at a point in his career where little adaptation should be needed.
He’s played Premier League football since Villa’s promotion in 2019, featured regularly in Europe, and established himself with England. His ability to slot in centrally or at right-back gives Arteta the kind of flexibility he’s come to value in his defensive group.
There will also be familiar faces waiting for him at London Colney. Konsa played alongside four Arsenal players with England at the World Cup and revealed they had already given him an idea of what to expect from life at the club.
“They said I'll enjoy it,” he said. “I've played with four of them. I'm looking forward to training with them and playing with them.”

Saliba’s current absence has only underlined the need to avoid leaving the defence exposed to another injury crisis.
Konsa gives Arsenal another senior option who can step straight into a major Premier League or Champions League fixture, without forcing the rest of the back four to be shuffled around him.
His debut, though, may have to wait a little longer.
Konsa is not expected to be available for today’s opener against Coventry, so the Gunners' trip to Aston Villa on August 31 could be his first chance to make his debut – and an immediate reunion with the club he’s called home since 2019.
Arsenal had to show patience to get the deal over the line, with Villa holding out for a higher fee. In the end, the agreed package gives Arteta the defensive reinforcement he wanted, without hitting that initial valuation.
Saliba’s injury may have added urgency, but Konsa is not just a stopgap.
That ambition came through again when Konsa was reminded of FaceTiming his Arsenal teammates during last season’s trophy parade and asked whether he hoped to be on the bus himself next summer.
“100 per cent, that's the plan,” he said. “I'm here to win. I'll do everything in my power to continue bringing success to this club.”
