Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola could finally be entering a decisive stage.
According to @Djaameel\_, Paris Saint-Germain are now prepared to reduce their initial asking price for the French winger.
Even more interestingly, Liverpool are aware of PSG’s change in stance and are now pushing to negotiate an even lower fee.
That could be exactly the development the Reds have been waiting for.
PSG are starting to blink
For much of the summer, PSG have held a hugely ambitious valuation for Barcola.
Reports have suggested their initial demands were around the €150m-€170m mark, although more recent reporting indicates the French champions are now prepared to lower that figure.
Liverpool have never appeared keen to simply meet PSG’s original valuation.
Instead, the Reds have continued negotiating and waiting for the situation to change.
And now it appears it might be changing.
PSG are lowering their demands.
Liverpool want to lower them even further.
The transfer battle is entering its most interesting phase.
Mika Godts could be the reason
The reported change in PSG’s position comes after the club signed Mika Godts from Ajax.
That is potentially hugely significant.
PSG have already added more attacking options this summer, with Godts joining their forward line alongside other new arrivals.
That makes it increasingly difficult for the French club to justify keeping every attacking player happy.
And if Luis Enrique doesn’t see Barcola as essential to his plans, PSG may eventually decide that selling him makes financial sense.
Recent reporting has also linked PSG’s willingness to negotiate directly with their growing number of attacking options.
Liverpool now have to play this perfectly
This is where I think Liverpool’s approach is absolutely right.
If PSG have already reduced their valuation, Liverpool shouldn’t immediately meet the new figure.
They should negotiate.
The Reds know Barcola wants Liverpool.
They know PSG have strengthened their attack.
They know the player has not been involved in recent matches.
And they know the transfer window is getting closer to its conclusion.
Liverpool therefore have some leverage.
The question is whether they can use it to bring the price down to a level they’re comfortable with.
Barcola still wants Liverpool
The biggest positive for Liverpool is that the player’s preference reportedly remains Anfield.
That matters.
A transfer involving a player of Barcola’s quality was always going to require Liverpool and PSG to find common ground.
But if Barcola is pushing for the move, PSG have to consider whether keeping an unhappy player is actually worth it.
Liverpool’s challenge is simply to make sure they don’t pay more than they need to.
This could be the perfect time to strike
Liverpool have already explored alternatives.
Yankuba Minteh has been pursued.
Ibrahim Mbaye has been heavily linked.
Kenan Yıldız has also emerged as a potential alternative.
That puts Liverpool in a stronger position during negotiations.
They don’t have to pay PSG whatever they demand.
They have other options.
But there is no denying that Barcola appears to remain the preferred target.
