Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth £51 million, with the England international becoming the latest addition to Mikel Arteta’s defensive options.
The 28-year-old had attracted interest from Liverpool during the summer as they assessed their options at the back.

His ability to operate at both centre-back and right-back made him an appealing target for a side looking to add greater versatility and experience to its defence.
Liverpool were reportedly monitoring Konsa alongside England teammate John Stones. However, Aston Villa’s valuation of around £60 million was considered a significant financial commitment, and the Reds eventually opted to bring in Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona instead.
Arsenal, meanwhile, continued pushing for Konsa and eventually returned with an improved proposal that included add-ons.
Villa accepted the offer, allowing the Gunners to complete a deal for a defender who had reportedly been keen on moving to the Emirates.
The move also addresses an immediate need in Arteta’s squad. William Saliba is facing a prolonged spell on the sidelines with a back injury, while Jurrien Timber is still recovering from a groin problem, leaving Arsenal short of established defensive options.
Konsa’s versatility was therefore an important factor in Arsenal’s decision. He can operate centrally or step in at right-back, giving Arteta additional flexibility as he manages his defensive options during the opening weeks of the season.
The England international arrives at Arsenal after several years of consistent performances for Aston Villa.
He has made 286 appearances for the club since joining from Brentford and played an important role in Villa’s transformation from relegation battlers into regular contenders for European football.
Konsa also enjoyed a strong international campaign, starting every match during England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals before they were eliminated by Argentina. His defensive numbers further underline his consistency, with Konsa winning more ground duels than any other Premier League player last season, finishing ahead of Virgil van Dijk and Gabriel.
The defender began his career at Charlton Athletic, making his senior debut in 2016 before moving to Brentford and eventually joining Villa. His development at Villa Park established him as a proven Premier League defender and earned him a regular place in England’s squad.
Although Arsenal have now secured his signature, Konsa is unlikely to make his debut in the club’s Premier League opener against Coventry City.
He missed Thursday’s midday registration deadline, meaning his first appearance could instead come against his former side Aston Villa on August 31.
