Ezri Konsa commits his future to Arsenal

**Arsenal** have announced the signing of **Ezri Konsa**.

Last week, the interest of the _Gunners_ in the 28-year-old was made public as the club put forward an initial bid of £30 million for the player. However, **Aston Villa** turned down the offer, which fell far short of the reported £60 million valuation that the potential sellers had placed on a starting defender.

Talks with **Bayer Leverkusen** were reported over the possibility of signing **Jarell Quansah** as an alternative option to Konsa, but a breakthrough came in the negotiations this week. After it appeared that a £51 million valuation had been agreed, the transfer was finally rubberstamped for £55 million.

Sporting director **Andrea Berta** has explained why the _Gunners_ believed a purchase was worthwhile.

_“Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers. Being comfortable in both central defence and at right-back, Ezri will bring valuable versatility to our squad while maintaining the high defensive standards which are fundamental to our challenge of winning major trophies._

_“We are welcoming a player with proven_ **_Premier League_** _and international experience, and strong leadership qualities, who will adapt seamlessly to our style of play. Just as importantly, we are welcoming a player with the character and mentality to make an immediate impact within our club.”_

This transfer is a logical move for the club. **Arsenal** achieved the feat of being **Premier League** champions mainly because of two factors that Konsa offers: squad depth and defensive stability.

The _Gunners_ brought eight new players into their ranks last summer, including two defenders. One of them, **Cristhian Mosquera**,was an asset at central defence and right back when **Jurrien Timber** or **William Saliba** were injured and **Ben White** was either unavailable or short of the standard required.

But the 22-year-old is nowhere near the level of the **France** international, whose back issues became too much to handle at the **World Cup**. After withdrawing from the action against **Spain** prematurely, he opted against surgery to undergo a protracted period of rehabilitation. If he is expected to be absent for at least a few months, the presence of a senior deputy avoids putting excess pressure on Mosquera.

Though Timber should be back in the mix much sooner than Saliba, his fitness record has been worrying since he signed for **Arsenal**. After spending most of his debut season on the sidelines with an ACL injury, he had a minor operation on an ankle injury at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. He fared well in the first half of 2025/26 season, but groin pain has kept him out of action since March.

Konsa has been a capable option at right back and centre back in both positions for **England** and **Aston Villa** in the last few years, so he has an important role to fulfil at the start of this season.

This might have been the transfer window when fans wanted the club to raise their ceiling, but at least buying Konsa and **Bruno Guimaraes** gives more reassurance that their floor should not dip too low.
