**Liverpool fans are desperate to see a new midfielder brought in this summer, and reliable journalist James Pearce has dropped a big update on their stance.**
The Reds haven’t added a single new face in the middle of the park, despite struggling in that area last season, not least because of an out-of-sorts Alexis Mac Allister.
Curtis Jones is off to Inter Milan, which is only heightening the need for a midfield addition, even though Trey Nyoni has emerged as a squad option, following an excellent pre-season for Liverpool.
Many Reds supporters feel that a defensive midfielder in the mould of Fabinho is needed in terms of balance, with Ryan Gravenberch and Mac Allister more naturally attack-minded in style.
But despite this, [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7526304/2026/08/21/liverpool-curtis-jones-scouse-players/)‘s Pearce reports that Liverpool “don’t believe that a specialist No 6 is required”, due to how Andoni Iraola “sets up his team to press as a unit.”
He adds that in the Spaniard’s system, the “midfield is not built around a Fabinho-type player providing cover and protection for the back line when others venture forward”, with a “collective responsibility to get up and back” on show instead.

While showing faith in Nyoni being a genuinely reliable squad player is great to see, it feels negligent not to add a single midfielder to Liverpool’s squad before the end of the month.
They have lost a dependable figure in Jones, and there is no guarantee that Mac Allister will return to top form, while injuries are always possible during relentless seasons.
Adam Wharton is the dream option for many, but even if the £100m-rated Crystal Palace ace is out of the question, bringing in one new face makes complete sense for Liverpool.
It certainly doesn’t need to be a No.6 if Iraola doesn’t believe he needs one, but extra legs feel vital, adding a much-needed freshness after such a tough 2025/26 campaign.
