Klay Thompson is expected to continue his career with the Miami Heat after reaching a buyout agreement with the Dallas Mavericks.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Thompson is expected to sign with Miami once he clears waivers following his departure from Dallas.
The Mavericks officially announced their buyout agreement with the 36-year-old guard, bringing his two-season stint with the franchise to an end.
Klay Thompson expected to land in Miami
Miami had been pursuing Thompson throughout the offseason and was widely viewed as one of the strongest potential destinations if he became available through a buyout.
The Heat had previously explored ways to acquire the four-time NBA champion while he remained under contract with Dallas, either through a trade or by waiting for the Mavericks to eventually buy him out.
Thompson was entering the final season of the three-year, $50 million contract he signed with Dallas in 2024 and was due approximately $17.5 million in 2026-27.
He averaged 11.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 21.7 minutes per game during the 2025-26 season, while shooting 38.3% from three-point range.
The move would give Miami another proven perimeter shooter as the organization continues building its roster around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Before joining Dallas, Thompson spent the first 11 seasons of his NBA career with the Golden State Warriors, winning four championships alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
The five-time All-Star will first need to clear waivers before officially signing with the Heat.
