He addressed that issue on the interview. Fofana has also shed some light on his future at Stamford Bridge.
Wesley Fofana has shown his different self in the interview
In an interview with The Athletic, Wesley Fofana has opened-up about various things. The French defender was emotional while speaking about the things he had faced and was still facing. But in this interview he has pointed out that these things do not fully summarize him.
In 2025-26 season’s Champions League, in the round of 16 tie between Chelsea and PSG, Wesley Fofana was found to be smiling on the bench while his side was 3-0 down. Eventually, the Blues lost the tie 8-2 on aggregate. After the match he also talked with his national team teammate, Ousmane Dembele while laughing. Chelsea fans were furious at this scene and commentators were also highlighting this incident. Cameras were zoomed at the French defender.
In this interview he said, “In football, things can be like this. I came with the ambition to be the best in my position and to help the team. So when things go in a bad way, I accept to be the guy. People try to make it a big thing, do a big story, things like this. The most important thing for me is that the club know my mentality, my team-mates know my mentality. If I am on the bench or on the pitch, of course I want to win, and I try my best for every game.”

Wesley Fofana has stepped up against racism
Fofana has faced several racist comments during his time at Stamford Bridge. Fans have shown their frustration at his mistakes on the football pitch. In February 2026, he was sent off in a match against Burnley. For that matter, he had received several racist posts on his social media. He called out such things on Instagram writing, “2026, it’s still the same thing, nothing changes.” During this interview he did not forget to speak against racism.
He said, “It is very important for me or other players to show. I think we need to continue to talk about this. We need to educate people. I think the people behind Instagram need to work on that. I exposed this on Instagram and Twitter because I think they need to be more aware and be more conscious about this problem we have. It is not only football. I think the world is a little bit like this, and it is too easy to say some things.”
Wesley Fofana has no idea about his future
The 25-year-old was brought by Chelsea from Leicester City for £69.5m. He is the only senior signing left in the squad during the Boehly-Clearlake ownership era. He has three years left in his Chelsea contract. But he does not know how many years he will be playing for the Premier League side.
He said that he joined the London club to win trophies. Fofana is also excited to see the new faces arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer. If he performs this season and helps Xabi Alonso to win trophies, he may win the hearts of the fans.
