Bradley Barcola is a key transfer target for Liverpool this summer
Liverpool will open its Premier League campaign away at Newcastle this weekend before returning to Anfield a week later to face Nottingham Forest in its first home fixture.
And with the September 1 transfer deadline fast approaching, it is also a crucial period for Liverpool in the summer window. After he arrived from Bournemouth to replace Arne Slot, Andoni Iraola still has plenty of work to do, with reinforcements required while the club also looks to offload players.
Victor Munoz has already arrived, while Ronald Araujo has joined on loan, but the Spaniard remains in need of further additions. Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye are both of interest, with the former, in particular, a major target, while Liverpool is also continuing to assess potential departures.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has explained Liverpool made an inquiry to Real Madrid about Brazilian forward Endrick, only to be rebuffed.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said, "The story around Endrick over the last two or three days is actually true.
"Now important to mention Liverpool also made a call to understand if there was a chance to sign Endrick on loan with a buy option clause, on a permanent deal with a big proposal. Liverpool explored the possibility to sign Endrick.
"But Real Madrid, and when I say Real Madrid I mean Florentino Perez the president, and Jose Mourinho the coach, decided to keep Endrick."

Despite the fact that Liverpool's pursuit of Bradley Barcola continues to rumble on, it has been claimed by BBC Sport's Liverpool reporter Aadam Patel that a move for the Paris Saint-Germain winger remains "very likely".
"Liverpool's priority in the transfer market is still in attack and namely, Bradley Barcola," writes Patel.
"The pursuit of Barcola is dragging on but it is very likely that both PSG and Liverpool to come to an agreement this summer for the French winger."

Jayden Danns made his long-awaited return from injury as Liverpool U21s drew with Everton U21s at Goodison Park, playing for the first time since he went off against Manchester City in March, writes Matt Addison.
But that was far from the only story in an eventful second period that saw Mor Talla Ndiaye end the game in goal for Liverpool and Braiden Graham get sent off for throwing a punch.
Will Wright, who was afforded chances under Andoni Iraola this summer while Danns was absent, opened the scoring with a low finish early on when he clinically netted from inside the penalty area, but both sides had early chances in a competitive battle, and that lead didn't last.

One player that could be in line to leave Liverpool before the transfer deadline is Harvey Elliott.
The midfielder spent last season on loan at Aston Villa but had his minutes severely reduced due to complications linked with the obligation to buy.
Elliott has played some part in preseason under Andoni Iraola in recent weeks, but the priority next term is playing plenty of football.
According to The Athletic, the fact he's been playing catch-up has left him at somewhat of a disadvantage. He needs minutes and it's difficult to see him getting them at Liverpool, at this stage.

One of the key selection problems Liverpool face this season is the long-term absence of Hugo Ekitike.
Alexander Isak himself suffered a handful of fitness problems last term, including a broken leg, so everyone is understandably wary of becoming over reliant on the Swede and potentially causing injury.
Andoni Iraola was asked about this dilemma in his pre-Newcastle press conference and he explained who he believes can fill in when needed.

Andoni Iraola has confirmed his decision on Liverpool’s vice-captaincy while explaining why Alisson may not be the preferred option to wear the armband during games this season. Iraola has identified four players who will form the Reds’ leadership group, with Virgil van Dijk as captain, followed by Alisson as vice-captain, alongside Joe Gomez and Dominik Szoboszlai. Iraola has also explained why Alisson may not regularly wear the captain’s armband despite being Van Dijk's second in command.
Speaking in his pre-Newcastle press conference, the Spaniard said: "I explained to Alisson that it might not be possible he wears the armband because big limitation on the goalkeepers wearing the armbands. I had one season with Neto at Bournemouth and then you have to use a different player that can act as a captain and it's not viable. But I wanted to let him know he is valuable, so I explained that Alisson. He is a goalkeeper."

"Yes [I wanted to keep him] Curtis is a good player but I understood this. He is coming for some years in the same situation, so I knew from that moment it could happen (he would leave).Nyoni?"I am very happy with Trey, he has been good in pre-season not only in the games he is facing top level, so we have no doubts. He will be valuable for us, I think he will play a lot."

"I suppose it will be a special for the former club when you play them in their stadium, same when I go to Bournemouth. You always want to do well and everyone will be motivated. Same for Alex."
On his fitness, Iraola added: "Keeping him fit? I think the same as others, an important player for us, in a very good place. Training every day, adding minutes, played a good World Cup with Sweden, fitness levels.
"I want to keep him there as much as we can. We know his level, he will score the goals. He will give us a lot of things. My fight with him, the instructions, is off the ball. He wants to score but I try not to judge the strikers if they have or haven't scored."
When asked about Cody Gakpo's potential exit, Iraola said: "Cody is performing well, has been since first day, understanding everything we need. You can feel it straight away, he is smart, understands the game. He has been one of our best players in the friendlies, performing well. I cannot tell you the XI, but he is in a good shape."

""You know, we cannot speak about players who aren't ours. I understand the questions. Curtis Jones, you know, an ongoing situation. I talked to him on the first or second training, and I valued him a lot, he loves this club and that was clear. But I understood the outcome would be what it is in the end.
"What we need? Some situations are clear - on the wing, we need specific players for that. Other positions, we have to be open minded to situations that can improve our team. It is about improving the squad and we have good players here."

Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has responded to speculation surrounding Yankuba Minteh, with the Seagulls boss far from ruling out an exit for the winger amid interest from Liverpool.
"All the players, in general, there are rumors about," Hurzeler said in a press conference. "They are important players because they are a big part of the journey in the last two years.
"But in football, we all have to understand that it is normal if you are successful and the team is doing well, and you have some good achievements, then individuals can shine.
"Then, of course, it will be a big ask for our players. That is part of our identity, and it is part of my job here. It was clear for everyone that this might happen during a busy transfer window."

Victor Munoz has had quite the summer, signing for Liverpool and winning the World Cup with Spain. Now, he says he is ready to kick on under Andoni Iraola.
"I can't wait to get underway with playing in the league season," Munoz told club media.
"But in terms of my aims and objectives, initial ones are to get used to the pace and the speed of the game here in England, to grow as a player and also to just try and improve with every day that goes by in training and then in games."

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has questioned whether Florian Wirtz has the physical stature to thrive in the Premier League after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen.
"The jury is out on whether he possesses the tools to overcome the physical challenge, and I must admit, I have my doubts," Carragher wrote in his Daily Telegraph column.
"When he joined Liverpool, the hope at Anfield was that Wirtz would dominate in the same manner as Kevin De Bruyne did. But the German does not have the athleticism or running and shooting power of De Bruyne.
"Even at his best, Wirtz has looked ‘neat and tidy’ rather than the killer in and around the penalty box one would have expected given his fee and reputation.
"He has resembled a useful squad addition for about £40M rather than a game-changer who cost £115M."

Liverpool will make more signings this summer, head coach Andoni Iraola has insisted ahead of this weekend's trip to Newcastle in the Premier League.
"We will definitely sign some players," Iraola told Jamie Carragher in an interview for Sky Sports.
The full version will be released later on Friday, with the Liverpool boss previewing the new season and offering some insight into his tactical approach.
"Some deals you have to wait until the end," Iraola continued. "But the end is the important picture, the one we will have on September 1, because it is true that we are still quite thin."

Liverpool needs to sign another couple of forwards this summer, with Bradley Barcola the priority.
Yankuba Minteh and Ibrahim Mbaye are among those to have been considered alongside the Frenchman.
Elsewhere, if Curtis Jones leaves, Trey Nyoni could step up. And Ronald Araujo has added depth at the back after arriving on loan from Barcelona.
With little more than a week to go until the deadline, it could be a busy period for sporting director Richard Hughes.

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore says Giorgi Mamardashvili might need to leave on loan to get the minutes he needs to progress to the next level.
"Goalkeepers and strikers need regular match minutes to develop — you cannot refine spatial awareness or match sharpness purely from the bench," Collymore told 10bet.
"If Mamardashvili is told he won't feature in key Premier League or Champions League fixtures, seeking an immediate loan is the smartest career move.
"Accepting a pure back-up role for extended periods risks framing a player as a secondary option in the eyes of other top European clubs. He needs to proactively seek regular first-team football to maintain his career momentum."

Liverpool attacking midfielder Kieran Morrison made his debut for Sheffield Wednesday yesterday after being confirmed as having signed on a season-long loan.
The Owls lost 1-0 against Bradford and Morrison played 21 minutes off the bench. He should do well in League One, having starred for the Reds at U21 level last term.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has had a mixed time with Real Madrid so far, but his former Anfield teammate Adrian, who retired this summer and now works behind the scenes for Real Betis, is backing him to come good.
"It was a mix of adapting to a new style and dealing with injuries," Adrian said when he was asked about the difficult debut campaign that Alexander-Arnold experienced.
"That held him back. Expectations were sky‑high, and people wanted instant magic. But he’ll show the level he had at Liverpool — he’s too good not to."
