Martin Odegaard’s first Emirates Stadium goal since December offered Arsenal something potentially more valuable than another name on the scoresheet against Coventry City.
The captain looked increasingly like the player who once dictated Arsenal’s best attacking football alongside Bukayo Saka.
Odegaard completed 75 minutes of Friday night’s 3-0 Premier League victory with 72 touches and 55 short passes, according to The Guardian’s post-match analysis.
His goal ended an eight-month wait to score at home.
More importantly, the patterns around him started to look familiar again.

Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka connection returns
Arsenal have spent heavily strengthening Mikel Arteta’s squad, but rediscovering the best version of an existing partnership could provide another major attacking improvement.
Odegaard and Saka repeatedly combined down Coventry’s left.
Shortly before half-time, the pair exchanged possession several times in one extended sequence before Arsenal eventually worked an opening for Declan Rice.
It recalled the relationship which previously made Arsenal’s right side so difficult to defend.
Saka also opened his Premier League account for the season, scoring Arsenal’s second goal against Coventry.
Odegaard followed after the break.
Ben White burst around Saka on the overlap before the Arsenal captain moved into space inside the penalty area and finished beyond Carl Rushworth.

Sky Sports also highlighted the combinations between White, Saka and Odegaard on Arsenal’s right, with Arteta’s side repeatedly finding ways through Coventry’s defensive structure.
Arteta expects more from Arsenal captain
Last season never consistently produced the best version of Odegaard.
Injuries interrupted his campaign and Arsenal were often forced to find attacking solutions without the rhythm previously established between their captain and Saka.
Arteta believes there is more to come.
After Friday’s victory, The Guardian reported that the Arsenal manager specifically highlighted Saka and Odegaard when discussing how his existing squad can improve.
Arteta stressed the importance of developing the connections already within his team following two campaigns in which important attacking players missed significant periods.
Friday provided an early example.
Christos Tzolis gave Arsenal a direct threat from the opposite flank, while the White-Odegaard-Saka combination began to function with the fluency supporters have seen before.
That balance could become particularly important.
Opponents have often been able to overload Saka because so much of Arsenal’s creativity flowed through him.
Tzolis creating danger on the left changes that equation. Odegaard returning to his most influential role makes it harder again.
Arsenal’s summer recruitment has given Arteta more options.
Getting his captain and star right-winger back onto the same wavelength could be just as valuable.
