There has long been a stigma around Cole Palmer’s personality and how he can conduct himself.

Cole Palmer’s laid-back, introverted personality has often been misunderstood.

While his cool demeanour makes him deadly on the pitch, it played a key role in Thomas Tuchel leaving Palmer out of England’s 2026 World Cup squad. Tuchel questioned his overall impact, preferring vocal leaders who fitted a strict system.

Palmer thrives best when given total tactical freedom. Under Liam Rosenior, Palmer struggled because he wasn’t trusted to express himself, playing on the right instead.

But Xabi Alonso looks as if he will unleash him in a central role.

Xabi Alonso shares ‘interesting’ interactions with Cole Palmer

Ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener with Fulham, Xabi Alonso was quizzed on his new players, including Cole Palmer.

Alonso put any kind of doubts to bed over Palmer’s personality, stating that he’s actually been a joy to work with and is rather smart.

Interviewer asked: “How have you found working with Cole Palmer personality-wise?”

Alonso responded: “Yeah, different players they need different connections and Cole for sure he’s very analytical I think that he’s a smart you need to give him his space to connect but I’m really enjoying it because he’s a top talent and with little he understands a lot, so it’s been very interesting.”

Cole Palmer is happy once again at Chelsea

One of the big reasons for Cole Palmer’s change in mood comes down to the fact that he’s been reunited with his good friend Morgan Rogers. The pair have already been seen joking around and the obvious question of whose celebration is it has come up quite often in interviews.

And the best part is that Rogers’ arrival won’t affect where Palmer plays, as Xabi Alonso intends to use the former Aston Villa man on the left-hand side.

It’s just down to Palmer to deliver on the field.
