Curtis Jones is set to leave Liverpool and join Inter Milan in a £30m deal, capping months of talks between the two clubs this summer. The transfer news brings an end to his 16-year association with Liverpool, ahead of Friday’s medical in Milan.
The deal, numbers and timeline
Inter have agreed a fee worth around €35m, close to £30m, for the midfielder. The package includes an initial fee of around £30m, with a further £4-5m available in add-ons. As reported by ESPN, Jones will travel to Italy on Friday for his medical. Liverpool have also added a 10% sell on clause to the final agreement terms. That clause could hand the Reds a further payday if Inter sell him on for a profit down the line.
The move ends a long chase that started when Inter first showed interest in January. Back then, Liverpool turned down a loan offer with a view toward a full transfer. In June, Inter returned with a formal bid worth close to £21.7m for the player. Liverpool rejected that offer too, since they valued Jones nearer to £35m at the time. Talks picked up again once Inter offered terms similar to their deal for Djed Spence. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Inter viewed Jones as a priority target since May, well before this transfer window opened.

What Curtis Jones leaves behind at Anfield
Jones came through Liverpool’s academy after signing at just nine years old, eventually making his first-team debut under Jurgen Klopp in 2019 and going on to rack up 228 appearances for the club. His workload increased last season to 48 appearances across all competitions, with 34 of those coming amid a troubled defence of the Premier League title under Arne Slot.
Tactically, Curtis Jones offered real football value because he could play across midfield and even at full-back. He was often used as a makeshift right-back last season, filling gaps instead of owning one role. He scored 22 goals in total, a fair return for a player known mainly for his work rate. His exit leaves Liverpool with one fewer experienced option across midfield and defence. It also creates a fresh chance for 19-year-old Trey Nyoni to step into the squad. Nyoni impressed several coaches during pre season and could now get more regular minutes.
Iraola’s reaction and what comes next
Andoni Iraola, who replaced Arne Slot as Liverpool boss this summer, spoke about the transfer during his first press conference in charge. As reported by BBC, Iraola said: “I rate Curtis very highly, for me he is a great, great player, and I hope he can continue with us.” He also praised the midfielder as a proper local lad who grew up close to the stadium. With Curtis Jones leaving, Liverpool will have no homegrown Scouse players left in their first team squad. That shift follows last summer, when Trent Alexander-Arnold left his boyhood club to join Real Madrid.
Liverpool will view the fee as fair value given he had one year left on his deal. The alternative was letting his contract run down and losing him for free next summer instead.
