Atletico Madrid have reportedly stepped up their pursuit of Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, with the Spanish club exploring a potential loan deal before the summer transfer window closes.
Reports this week suggested Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany travelled to London to discuss Jackson’s situation with Chelsea, as Diego Simeone’s side look to strengthen their attacking options. Atletico’s interest comes amid uncertainty surrounding their forward line, with Alexander Sorloth dealing with injury and continued speculation surrounding Julian Alvarez.
Jackson returned to Chelsea this summer following a season-long loan at Bayern Munich. Although the Senegal international was largely used as a substitute behind Harry Kane, he still managed 11 goals in 34 competitive appearances. CHELSEA, however, are looking to reduce an oversized squad and Jackson has reportedly been made available for transfer.
The major stumbling block is Chelsea’s preference for a permanent sale. Reports have indicated that the Blues value Jackson at around £60m-£65m, a figure that could make a straight transfer difficult for Atletico. Spanish outlet AS reported on August 21 that Chelsea were unwilling to consider a loan and that Atletico had consequently cooled their interest.
Opinion: Why Atletico could be ideal for Jackson
For Chelsea, it would provide an opportunity to move a player who does not appear to be central to Xabi Alonso’s plans while potentially allowing Jackson to rebuild his market value. With CHELSEA continuing to trim their squad, even a temporary departure would create valuable space.
For Jackson, Atletico could offer a fresh start in a league he already knows from his time with Villarreal. More importantly, working under Simeone could help develop the striker’s movement, pressing and decision-making.
Jackson possesses pace, physicality and an ability to threaten defenders in behind, qualities that could complement Atletico’s attacking options.
Atletico would also benefit. Jackson offers a different profile from some of their existing forwards and could provide depth while their attacking situation remains unsettled.
