Jamie Carragher was never going to pass up the opportunity to have a dig at Manchester United.
The former Liverpool player was on pundity alongside [Gary Neville](https://www.balls.ie/world-cup/pico-lopes-cape-verde-argentina-658885) and Ian Wright on Sky Sports on Friday night, as Arsenal beat Coventry in the first game of the Premier League season.
While discussing the potential of several big sides this season, the conversation inevitably turned to Carragher's Liverpool and Neville's Manchester United.
Neville Questions Liverpool's Chances

Carragher admitted that he didn't expect any of the "big" teams to have particularly poor seasons. He did however, suggest that there is usually one side who fails to live up to their expectations:
> There's normally one that does.

> I can't think who it would be this season.
Neville paused before nodding when host David Jones suggested that Carragher's Liverpool may be that side in the coming season.
Carragher needed little provocation before turning his attention to Neville's United. Given the rivalry between the two clubs, it was only a matter of time until he took a swing at Michael Carrick's side:
> People are getting very carried away with Man United.
>
> Man United's back four is the same back four they had five years ago.
The scouser was cleary unconvinced about United's chances of mounting a challenge at the top end of the table this season.
The conversation sparked yet another brief exchange between the two ex-players, with each of them once more on opposite ends of the Man United - Liverpool divide.
Carragher Backs Liverpool, Neville Backs United

As the conversation went on, it inevitably turned to "[who has the better XI](https://www.balls.ie/football/jamie-carragher-manchester-united-mateus-fernandes-661661) heading into the 26/27 season".
Unsurprisingly, the two pundits both firmly backed their own clubs.
However, Neville was quick to challenge Carragher's assessment of Liverpool. He questioned whether Carragher truly believed Liverpool's squad to be stronger than United.
> There's less belief than a couple of years ago though, isn't there.
While it remains to be seen who has the upper hand, Neville and Carragher disagreeing on live TV is certainly a statement that the Premier League is back.
