Alonso announces Seria A’s best‘something different’after joining Chelsea this summer!

Xabi Alonso believes Marco Palestra’s talent, versatility and character can make the young defender an important asset for Chelsea during the 2026/27 season.

Palestra joined Chelsea from Atalanta during the summer after an impressive breakthrough campaign on loan at Cagliari, where he was recognised as Serie A’s standout defender. The 21-year-old’s performances have generated considerable excitement at Stamford Bridge, with his ability to operate comfortably across the backline adding to his appeal.

The Italian defender demonstrated his versatility in Sardinia, featuring as both a full-back and wing-back while switching seamlessly between the left and right flanks. His comfort on either side was particularly notable, with opponents often struggling to identify his stronger foot or preferred position.

Alonso highlighted that adaptability as a rare quality, particularly in the modern Premier League, where tactical flexibility and defensive depth can prove decisive over the course of a long campaign.

Speaking to reporters ahead of CHELSEA’s opening fixture of the season away to Fulham on Monday night, the Chelsea head coach stressed the importance of players capable of performing in different roles

‘I would say it’s probably unusual in England because, in Italy for example, it’s quite common, and he has had this education in Italian football to play both profiles,’ explained Xabi. ‘It doesn’t matter if you are right-footed or left-footed, just that you are versatile. So he has this option, this energy.

‘He’s something different, maybe not that common here, but in Italy it’s quite common.’

‘He’s had a great impact as well in the changing room,’ Alonso added.

‘He’s integrated really well. He’s a great guy and with this freshness that he has brought, apart from his football qualities, he’s a very great addition to the club.’

Although Palestra remains relatively inexperienced at the highest level, his performances for Cagliari convinced Chelsea to move for him this summer. The club will now hope that his development continues in west London and that his versatility translates successfully to the Premier League.

CHELSEA begin their campaign at Fulham on Monday, with Alonso’s side looking to make a strong start under their new manager. Palestra will be among the players competing for a role as the season gets underway, with his ability to cover multiple positions potentially giving him an important part to play
