Xabi Alonso believes Marco Palestra has all the qualities required to become an important player for Chelsea during the 2026/27 season, with the new signing already making a strong impression on his manager.

Palestra joined Chelsea from Atalanta this summer in a deal worth around £43 million, becoming the first major signing of the Alonso era at Stamford Bridge. The 21-year-old arrived in west London after an outstanding campaign on loan at Cagliari, where his performances earned him recognition as one of Serie A’s leading young defenders. He was also named Serie A Defender of the Year and earned his first Italy caps.

Alonso has been impressed by Palestra’s development since his arrival, highlighting not only his ability on the pitch but also his personality and willingness to learn.

The Italian defender’s versatility could prove particularly valuable to Alonso, whose CHELSEA side is expected to operate with tactical flexibility. Palestra is capable of playing on either side of the defence and offers the athleticism required to operate in different defensive roles.

‘I would say it’s probably unusual in England because, in Italy for example, it’s quite common, and he has had this education in Italian football to play both profiles,’ explained Xabi. ‘It doesn’t matter if you are right-footed or left-footed, just that you are versatile. So he has this option, this energy.

‘He’s something different, maybe not that common here, but in Italy it’s quite common.’

‘He’s had a great impact as well in the changing room,’ Alonso added.

‘He’s integrated really well. He’s a great guy and with this freshness that he has brought, apart from his football qualities, he’s a very great addition to the club.’

Opinion: Why Palestra could be a brilliant signing

Palestra could ultimately prove to be one of Chelsea’s smartest additions of the summer.

He has enormous room for development, but his performances in Italy suggest he already possesses the foundations required to succeed at Premier League level. CHELSEA are investing in a player who combines youth with genuine first-team experience.

His versatility could be particularly important. Modern managers demand defenders who can adapt during matches, and Palestra’s ability to operate in different positions gives Alonso another tactical option.
