Chelsea have officially confirmed that João Pedro has signed a new contract until 2034, strengthening the Brazilian’s position at the heart of Xabi Alonso’s plans.
The 24-year-old has been rewarded after an outstanding first full season at Stamford Bridge, during which he scored 20 goals in all competitions and was voted Chelsea’s Player of the Season.
Chelsea confirmed the new João Pedro contract on Saturday, extending his long-term commitment to the club ahead of Monday’s Premier League opener against Fulham.
It represents the final step in a story ReadChelsea first covered earlier this month, when the Blues began working on improved terms following his excellent debut campaign.
João Pedro Chelsea contract now runs until 2034
The announcement goes further than initially expected.
ReadChelsea reported last week that an agreement was close over terms running until 2033 after interest from Barcelona.
Chelsea have now confirmed an even longer commitment, with Pedro tied down until 2034.
The forward has also been handed the No.9 shirt for the new campaign, underlining his growing status within Alonso’s squad.
Pedro said he felt “at home” at Chelsea and described committing his long-term future to the club as an easy decision.
Alonso backs João Pedro to become Chelsea leader
Alonso has also made clear how highly he rates the Brazilian.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, the head coach highlighted Pedro’s development both on the pitch and within the dressing room.
Alonso said his progress “as a great player and as a leader” is becoming increasingly noticeable.
That endorsement is significant ahead of Chelsea’s first competitive season under the Spaniard.
Pedro has already impressed during pre-season, including scoring twice in the 3-0 victory over AC Milan.
A new contract until 2034 and the No.9 shirt now remove any uncertainty over where he sits in Chelsea’s attacking hierarchy.
The challenge is straightforward: turn an excellent first year into the start of a long spell as one of Alonso’s most important players.
