Mikel Arteta is delighted with Arsenal’s decision to bring Ezri Konsa to the Emirates, with the manager viewing the England international’s arrival from Aston Villa as a significant addition to his defensive options.
Arsenal completed the signing of the 28-year-old on Friday, securing Konsa on a long-term contract in a deal worth £51 million initially, with a further £4 million potentially payable in add-ons. The defender has signed a four-year agreement with an option for an additional 12 months.
Konsa arrives in north London after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders during his time at Villa. His ability to operate at both centre-back and right-back is expected to give Arteta greater flexibility as Arsenal attempt to defend their Premier League title while competing across several fronts.
The signing also addresses an immediate concern for Arteta, with William Saliba sidelined by a back injury and Jurrien Timber continuing to manage a groin problem. Konsa’s experience and versatility therefore provide ARSENAL with valuable depth at a crucial stage of the campaign
Mikel Arteta on Ezri Konsa signing: “We’re looking at the squad as a whole. We have a really young defensive line.
“We’re getting a player who is 28 not 38 – in their prime in the heart of the team. He will give us so much in the next few years.”
Konsa was unable to feature in the season opener after only recently completing his move, but he is expected to compete for a place once he has built up his fitness following his involvement with England at the 2026 World Cup.
The defender himself has made clear that he is arriving with ambitions to win trophies. He described joining Arsenal as a privilege and said he was hungry to continue collecting silverware after helping Villa win the Europa League last season.
That mentality is understood to have appealed to Arteta, who wants players capable of handling the pressure associated with competing for major honours
For ARSENAL, Konsa’s arrival represents another investment in a squad built to challenge on multiple fronts.
