Pep Guardiola became infatuated with English football during his trophy-laden 10-year reign as Manchester City manager.
The Spaniard dominated the Premier League for a decade, winning the title six times and guiding City to a continental treble. Rival fans dreaded seeing him in the opposition dugout, and he beat 32 of 33 top-flight clubs.
Middlesbrough were the only Premier League side to avoid defeat against Guardiola, and that came during his debut campaign with the Citizens. The Riverside Stadium was one of the many grounds he visited, but another of English football's famous arenas often blew him away due to the atmosphere created by the passionate home support.

Guardiola's astonishing Premier League record saw him win 269 of 380 games, including wins at Manchester United's Old Trafford, Liverpool's Anfield, and Arsenal's Emirates Stadium. While he loved nothing more than beating one of City's three rivals, a trip to the Northeast of England always excited him.
The Spanish tactician felt that Newcastle United's St James' Park epitomized the beautiful game. After the Magpies held his City side in a thrilling 3-3 draw back in August 2022, he told reporters:
City trailed 3-1 before the hour mark but Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva spared their blushes. That didn't prevent the Toon Army from cheering their players after the final whistle after one of the most entertaining matches in Premier League history.
St James' Park has hosted many spectacles of a similar nature, and much of that is down to the Tyneside outfit's fans, who are among the loudest in the country. The single-tier Gallowgate End and Milburn Stand help turn up the volume, and they have a huge influence on the home team.
Guardiola didn't always manage to handle the roaring cauldron, suffering two defeats in the nine times he coached City at the stadium in the Premier League. He felt that this fixture often helped challenge his side:
"Newcastle away is always an incredible environment. The fans... it’s one of the best stadiums since I have been here in England. I know how they support the team. It’s a good test for us."

Guardiola will be a big loss for English football, but he'll also miss trips to grounds such as St James' Park. The 52,729-capacity stadium clearly left its mark on the Spaniard.

St James' Park wasn't the only stadium Guardiola praised during his time at City as he also felt that Anfield made for a special venue. Particularly how it often helped Liverpool pull off remarkable victories such as their iconic 4-0 win over Barcelona back in May 2019.
The Reds were 3-0 down on aggregate against Guardiola's former club in their Champions League semi-final tie. But the Kop watched magic unfold when Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum both bagged braces to send Jurgen Klopp's men through to the final.
Guardiola reflected on that game months later: "There's something about it that you will find in no other stadium in the world. They score a goal and over the next five minutes you feel that you'll receive another four. You feel small and the rival players seem to be all over."

Unlike St James' Park, Anfield proved to be a tricky stadium for Guardiola and he suffered five defeats in front of the Kop during his Premier League tenure. He did finish his reign with a 2-1 win at the Merseyside ground, just his second win there in top-flight history.
