Adam Wharton: Palace make shock decision on£78m transfer

LIVERPOOL

Liverpool have been interested in Adam Wharton for a long time. Now Manchester City are also looking at the English midfielder, as per latest transfer news. Crystal Palace have reached a final decision on Wharton’s potential departure. The London side have set a valuation on the midfielder.

Liverpool and Manchester City both are targeting Adam Wharton

Adam Wharton produced a breakthrough campaign last season. The Crystal Palace midfielder has played consistently well in the Premier League. He has made a significant reputation in English football. Signed by Palace from Blackburn Rovers in February 2024 for £18m, according to Transfermarkt. Before the onset of this summer transfer window, everyone predicted that he would move to a big club with a big transfer fee involved. But now we are going to enter the final week of the transfer window. Still, no club has started negotiations with the Eagles for the midfielder.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Man United have been monitoring him from the start of the window. Now it seems like the Red Devils will not pursue the midfielder. But their rivals have entered the stage and are trying to make an impact. Liverpool and Manchester City have closely viewed the youngster. The Premier League sides have enough reasons to go for a well established midfielder.

Liverpool manager, Andoni Iraola has shown the green light for this transfer in spite of the transfer fee being £78m. The Reds have accepted a bid of £30m from Inter Milan for midfielder Curtis Jones. They need to secure a replacement for the Englishman. Man City on the other hand have seen their midfield leaving the Etihad Stadium in just one transfer window. Rodri has moved to Barcelona, Tijjani Reijnders has joined Al-Qadsiah and Bernardo Silva is now a Real Madrid player. However, Elliot Anderson has arrived and Ayyoub Bouaddi is on the verge of signing for them. As reported by The Athletic, the Citizens have enquired about Adam Wharton.

Crystal Palace’s stance on Adam Wharton has been revealed

As of now, there will neither be any move for Adam Wharton to Anfield nor Etihad Stadium. Crystal Palace have reached a final decision on the Englishman’s stay at Selhurst Park. The London side has no interest in doing business involving Wharton. They are convinced that the 22-year-old will not leave the UEFA Conference League winners this season although they had set a price of £78m on him.

Recently Fabrizio Romano posted Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage’s comments on Wharton’s future on X. Pierre Sage said, “We sold big players and now I think it’s not the moment to do that. Adam can play at a big club but I think one year with us, one year with a new dynamic, will be good for him and we need him”.

Man United’s reasons to retreat from this potential transfer

The Red Devils are already on the verge of agreeing a deal for Cameroonian midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton. Moreover, they have signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in this window. It feels like they will not go for any other midfielder.

Youngsters like Tyler Fletcher, Jack Fletcher have already played for the senior team. Kobbie Mainoo is a regular who is still developing and has high potential. Mason Mount can also play in that position and has impressed in the pre-season.
