Celta Vigo want Liverpool midfielder to terminate contract at club

Andoni Iraola’s squad audit has produced a list of names who won’t be part of what happens next at Anfield.

Ifeanyi Ndukwe has already gone to Levante on loan.

Others have been left out of matchday squads while talks continue, with the club actively pushing several players towards the exit before 1 September.

Liverpool’s midfield is where the congestion is worst.

Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni are all competing for two spots in Iraola’s 4-2-3-1, with Florian Wirtz installed as the preferred No 10.

Curtis Jones has already left for Inter Milan in a £30m deal.

That’s a reshaped department, and it leaves no room for a player who hasn’t kicked a ball in over a year.

Celta Vigo think they’ve found a solution for one of them.

The Galician club want Stefan Bajcetic back, and they’ve attached a condition: he has to terminate the remaining year of his Liverpool contract and arrive on a free transfer.

Faro de Vigo report the 21-year-old is closer than ever to a return to the club that produced him, having joined Celta’s academy in 2013 and left for Anfield at 16.

The catch is what Celta are actually offering.

Not a first-team place, but a spot in Celta Fortuna, their reserve side in a physically demanding division, with a pathway back up if he performs.

Fredi Alvarez needs a midfielder for that squad.

Hugo Burcio, Andres Antanon and Anxo Rodriguez currently alternate between the two teams, and Bajcetic would do the same.

His numbers explain the caution.

Bajcetic hasn’t played a competitive minute since May 2025, when a hamstring injury ended his Las Palmas loan and required surgery.

Before that, he made 19 appearances for Salzburg across the Austrian Bundesliga, cup and Champions League, totalling 895 minutes, then 14 for Las Palmas with one goal, against Mallorca in February 2025.

At Liverpool he made 22 appearances in total, 19 of them during his 2022-23 breakthrough under Jurgen Klopp, including a goal off the bench against Aston Villa on Boxing Day.

A thigh injury in March 2023 stopped it dead.

He managed three appearances the following season, one of them a Premier League cameo against Tottenham that Klopp later admitted was a mistake, comparing the player’s readiness to arriving on a motorway with a bicycle.

Celta’s medical assessment reportedly has him physically fit, though needing time to rebuild competitive sharpness.

Claudio Giraldez, who coached him at youth level, has kept his distance publicly.

He said he doesn’t discuss players the club doesn’t have, while acknowledging that if an agreement worked for everyone, it would be a good situation.

Getafe have also been linked.

Nothing has been finalised.
