Trent Alexander-Arnold has claimed that he still watches every Liverpool game, amid speculation over a possible return to the club in the future.
It comes after a difficult first year for the right-back at the Bernabeu, where he was met with several different challenges on and off the pitch. Injury concerns were one of the main issues, as the defender struggled for availability at points in the previous campaign, preventing him from building the sort of momentum needed to make the position his own.
Add to that the instability that has been present for Los Blancos, and it's clear that Alexander-Arnold has had far from an ideal first campaign at Real Madrid since his switch from Liverpool.
It has all set up a key season this time around for the 27-year-old to show why the Spanish club pushed so hard to prise him away from Anfield.
However, the challenges have grown further, with the signing of Denzel Dumfries only adding further competition in his position, as well as the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager, adding a new dimension to his place in the side.
That has naturally led to speculation over a potential return to Liverpool for Alexander-Arnold, even with how the fans reacted to the move in the time since.

Those thoughts over a return have only been furthered by a claim that the academy graduate made to The Mirror, which was released just before Real Madrid's opening clash of the season against Espanyol.
He said: "I still watch every [Liverpool] game. I support them. I want to see them do well. I enjoy watching them, and there will always be a place in my heart for Liverpool, no matter what. It is home to me. It’s the place that gave me the opportunities to go and do what I’ve done, and I will always love it. It’s always a place that I’ll call home."
Many fans believe that the interview was Alexander-Arnold's first attempt to patch up the relationship between himself and the Liverpool fans, which took a turn after he announced his departure in 2025.
The defender was booed in his final few appearances of the 2024/25 campaign, before being met with a hostile atmosphere upon his return to Anfield in the Champions League last season. “The booing and disappointment from Liverpool supporters is something I’m absolutely able to shoulder," he also admitted in the interview.
"I can understand it, in my own way. I heard a lot during that period that Liverpool fans didn’t want to be told how to feel or think, and I agree. But I hope one day there’ll be a degree of understanding about the decisions I wanted to make around my own life.
“It hurts because of how much I’ve put into the club over the course of 20 years and the sacrifices I made for the club during that period. So of course it hurts, but I understand the disappointment. I even understand anger expressed through booing.”
It's the first potential step toward fixing a broken relationship between Alexander-Arnold and the Liverpool fans, over a year on from his decision to leave the club.
Whether that is to give his own side of the story or whether it is a precursor to a potential return remains to be seen. But for now, he looks set for another campaign at Real Madrid, which could be his most important yet.
