Marco Palestra’s Chelsea adaptation has earned another significant endorsement from Xabi Alonso, who believes the summer signing gives his squad qualities rarely seen in English football.
The 21-year-old could make his Premier League debut when Chelsea travel to Fulham on Monday night after making a strong impression throughout his first pre-season at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso has now highlighted Palestra’s ability to operate on either flank and the energy he offers within Chelsea’s new system.

Xabi Alonso impressed by Marco Palestra at Chelsea
Palestra joined Chelsea from Atalanta this summer after a breakthrough campaign on loan at Cagliari, where he was named Serie A’s standout defender.
His ability to play as either a full-back or wing-back has already given Alonso several options.
Speaking before the Fulham game, Alonso described that versatility as unusual in English football and said Palestra offers Chelsea “something different”.

The Chelsea head coach also praised how quickly the Italy international has settled at Cobham, highlighting his positive impact away from the pitch as well as his footballing qualities.
It continues the momentum Palestra built during pre-season.

Marco Palestra can solve a key Alonso problem
Versatility carries particular value in Alonso’s system.
Chelsea have regularly used a back three during pre-season, with the wing-backs asked to provide much of the team’s width. Palestra can fill that role on either side without forcing Alonso to dramatically alter the structure.
The Italian also impressed Alonso earlier in pre-season, with the manager saying after his opening appearances that Palestra was getting better with each game. Xabi Alonso on Palestra’s pre-season progress

Monday should provide the first indication of where he currently sits in the competitive hierarchy.
Reece James gives Alonso another option on the right, while Pedro Neto can operate as an attacking wing-back. Palestra’s ability to switch sides gives the Chelsea head coach considerably more freedom when changing shape.
Alonso’s latest comments suggest the Italian has already moved beyond simply adapting to his new club.
He is now pushing to become part of Chelsea’s strongest side.
