Newcastle United have announced their most significant St James’ Park capacity increase in years as part of a stadium improvement project this summer.
But the club’s official St James’ Park capacity keeps fluctuating season after season, according to the Premier League at least.
Amid all the talk of a St James’ Park expansion since the PIF-led takeover in 2021, the stadium’s capacity listed by the Premier League actually dropped from its previously listed 52,305 figure - until now.

Ahead of the 2023/24 season, St James’ Park’s capacity listed in the Premier League’s official handbook dropped to 52,258. The following season it increased by one to 52,258 before rising by six to 52,264 for the 2025/26 season. The initial reduction was largely due to the introduction of new hospitality sections, namely the ‘Wings’ seating area which removed a section of seats from the Leazes Stand to replace them with fewer, but more expensive seats.
Now St James’ Park has listed its largest official attendance increase in years in the Premier League handbook for the 2026/27 campaign. Ahead of the Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday and after a summer of renovations at the stadium, St James’ Park new official attendance has increased by 465 to 52,726.
However, this is slightly more than the figure listed in a recent club statement confirming all the upgrades at the stadium ahead of the new season.
The club statement read: “We've expanded our safe standing provision with the introduction of new safe standing areas on Level 7.

“Thanks to additional work carried out by our operations team, we've also increased stadium capacity by approximately 500 seats, taking St. James' Park's capacity to 52,719 - enabling more supporters to experience live football in person.”
It still marks a notable increase, though nowhere near the expansion levels many supporters are hoping for. Newcastle are yet to issue an update regarding the future of St James’ Park and whether the current stadium will be properly expanded to a 60,000-plus arena or a new stadium will be built on a different location.
