Travis Kelce was in disbelief when his Kansas City Chiefs teammate didn’t recognize a famous 2000s band.
Kelce is currently gearing up for his 14th NFL season with the Chiefs, and the superstar tight end knows that, no matter how youthful he might feel, he’s one of the old guys on the team.
That was made evident during a recent practice when Kelce made a comment in passing to his teammate and quarterback Justin Fields, a new addition to the team this offseason who is slated to be Patrick Mahomes’ backup.
When a song by rock band Blink-182 came on over the speakers at Chiefs practice, Kelce said, “‘Twas a banger, probably still is a banger."
He then said to Fields, “You go to a Blink-182 concert, that’s rockin’,” to which the quarterback replied, “You said who’s concert? I don’t know what that is. That must be back in the day.”
Kelce, who is just over a month away from celebrating his 37th birthday, couldn’t believe that FIelds didn’t know what he was talking about. “Back in the day? You were definitely alive for sure, you can’t say back in the day like that.”
The clip of the back-and-forth quickly went viral on social media, and most sided with Kelce that Fields, who is 27 years old entering his sixth NFL season, should know who Blink-182 are. After all, they are one of the defining rock bands of the late-1990s and 2000s who kids like Kelce grew up on.

“I’m Justin Fields’ age and Blink-182 has been in my Spotify top 5 since I was a kid,” wrote one person on X in reply to the clip. “Can’t trust a man who doesn’t know who Blink-182 is,” added another.
Others took it as an opportunity to remind Kelce how old he is and the experience he had with Fields is shared by people of his age everywhere.
“Travis realizing in real time he is in fact old,” one person replied to the clip on X.
“Everybody over 30 has been thru this conversation at least once,” added another. “That moment you realize you are in fact the unc on the field,” said another.
In reality, Fields, who was born in 1999, is old enough to know who Blink-182 are.
The band was founded in 1992 and rose to mainstream popularity in the 2000s through hits like ‘All The Small Things’ and ‘What’s My Age Again?’ It’s likely that Fields either hasn’t heard their songs, doesn’t care for that kind of music, or both.
On the football front, Kelce, Fields and the Chiefs are hoping to bounce back from what was an uncharacteristically poor 2025 season in which they finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs. They begin their regular season on Sept. 14 on Monday Night Football against the Denver Broncos.
