Liverpool rescued a point in the dying moments as youngster Victor Munoz won a penalty that was dispatched by Dominik Szoboszlai. Cody Gakpo had brought Liverpool back to 1-1 earlier in the game after Newcastle had taken an early lead.
Not much that he could do to stop either goal but did make a good save from Will Osula shortly after 20 minutes. Tried to get Liverpool playing further up the pitch by coming out and playing the ball close to the halfway line.
Struggled defensively in his battle with Barnes and got no luck against Hall when attacking. Of five crosses he was only successful with one.
Was caught out by Will Osula just after 20 minutes and Alisson had to make a good save. Came off at about 70 minutes for Ronald Araujo.
Got left hung out to try in defence with both goals as the midfield were nowhere to be seen for both goals. Helped both of his new centre-back partners out well and held the line. Made nine clearances in the game.
Was getting targeted throughout. Got beaten for pace by Elanga for the goal, got booked on 40 minutes and struggled to find his target in the box.
Gave the ball away cheaply in the lead up to the goal early on. Then didn’t be seen to work back as hard as he should have. Showed his ability to turn and go on several occasions with the ball at his feet. Taken off for a more attacking option at 2-1.
Was Liverpool’s main creative threat creating three chances and of course scored the crucial penalty in the dying seconds. He completed three of his 10 crosses and had two free kicks blocked by the wall. The partnership with Gravenberch will need further development as the pair were nowhere to be seen as Newcastle broke for both goals.
In the first set of substitutions after 60 minutes. Relatively ineffective although did try to create early on. Produced a good save out of the Newcastle keeper, but didn’t put pressure on at any other point.
Having broken onto the scene at St James’ last season, but he couldn’t really get into the game due to the strong performance of Lewis Hall. He had his only shot blocked and completed one of his two crosses.
Was Liverpool’s main attacking threat in open play. He took six shots but only got one on target, the goal. Gakpo created three chances but struggled to connect with Isak and Ngumoha.
Returning to St James’ Park, he struggled to get involved in the game.
