Julián Álvarez to Arsenal: Arsenal have made their move. Julián Álvarez, though, has other ideas. Fabrizio Romano reports that the Gunners have contacted people close to the Atlético Madrid forward, making it clear they want the lines of communication kept open. Arsenal are positioning themselves for the moment Álvarez changes his mind. Right now, he hasn’t either.
The 26-year-old wants Barcelona. No second choice, no alternative shortlist. Barcelona are the club he has in his head, despite Arsenal reportedly putting a £103 million opening offer on Atlético’s table.
Why Barcelona is struggling to make it happen
Here’s where the numbers get awkward. Barcelona’s financial position makes a deal difficult, while Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has reportedly slammed the door on a domestic move. The Spanish club were unhappy with Barcelona’s proposal of €100 million, structured across six instalments, and have little appetite for doing business with a rival. So Álvarez can want Camp Nou all he likes. Wanting it and getting it are two different things.
Álvarez has made his position clear
During the 2026 World Cup, Álvarez made clear that he wanted to leave Atlético. His relationship with the club has since deteriorated, with Diego Simeone leaving him out of Atlético’s opening La Liga victory over Málaga. That doesn’t scream long-term reconciliation.

Arsenal can put serious cash on the table, offer Champions League football and offer Álvarez a team built around Mikel Arteta’s ideas. Arteta has also reportedly spoken directly with the player. The problem is getting him to say yes.
Álvarez’s position is understood to have softened from a flat rejection to something closer to 55-45 in favour of remaining in Spain. That’s hardly a ringing endorsement of Arsenal. Yet transfer windows change calculations.
If Barcelona can’t finance the move and Atlético won’t sell domestically, Álvarez is left with an uncomfortable choice: stay at a club where relations have fractured, or listen to Arsenal. The Gunners are reportedly pushing towards a compromise worth around £115 million.

For a player who only wants Barcelona, that’s an enormous sum to ignore. Arsenal know what they’re buying: not just Álvarez, but the possibility that reality finally beats preference.
