Newcastle United 2-2 Liverpool: Matthias Jaissle has had his say following Newcastle’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool at St James’ Park.
Matthias Jaissle had ‘mixed feelings’ following his first Premier League match at Newcastle United head coach.
Despite an impressive performance from his side to twice take the lead against Liverpool at St James’ Park, they had to settle for a point after Dominik Szoboszlai converted a 99th-minute penalty to make it 2-2. Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock scored either side of Cody Gakpo’s strike from distance before Lewis Hall fouled Victor Munoz in the area deep into stoppage time.
Reflecting on the match, Jaissle said: “It was indeed a game with mixed feelings, especially in the end when you get the decision two points away. It's hard, it's really hard to digest.

“Overall there's also a lot of confidence and somehow we are really proud of what we saw throughout the 90 minutes. The young lads were doing an amazing job with all the challenges in that transition period. I'm not tired of mentioning that because this was special, that was already delivering on a high level and that makes us proud.”
Jaissle has been at Newcastle less than a month but has already been encouraged with what he has seen from his side in their first competitive game together.
“It was already a lot of what we want to see, therefore what I said, we are really proud in that short amount of time to see lads as a unit on the pitch, really committed to what they're doing and this is a really good base to build on,” he added.

The German also took encouragement from the fact that players like Sean Steur made his full Premier League debut at age 18 and Aladji Bamba came onto the pitch in the closing stages at age 20. Lewis Miley also returned from a serious injury to impress in the middle of the park.
24-year-old duo Lukas Hornicek and Amar Dedic also made their Premier League debuts.
“Again, it's really nice, therefore we're all so happy, even though we draw in the end,” Jaissle told The Gazette. “But we saw already so many good things. Really, I think the fans can identify the team with their expectations, the way how we want to play.
“This is already a high, high standard, and we want to improve on that. The players who played today, they were young, many of them inexperienced in the Premier League, so they will improve, they will adapt even better. So that's the way.”
