The New York Giants are trying to figure out who will make their Week 1 roster, as preseason games continue. One NFL insider believes the Giants won't hold on to veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
“Beckham is clearly on the bubble. Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney and Braxton Berrios all had the day off in Saturday's preseason game against the Dolphins. Malachi Fields, Darius Slayton and Calvin Austin III started. Beckham is behind them all on the depth chart,” ESPN's Jordan Raanan reported on Sunday.
It appears a trade may have to be in the works, for Beckham to find a role.
“Beckham has proven he can get open, but is that enough? Unless the Giants trade a wide receiver, there probably won't be room for him on the roster,” he added.
The Giants are under a new head coach this season, in John Harbaugh. Harbaugh played a role in bringing in Beckham. Beckham has expressed excitement at being able to play with the Giants once again.
The veteran wide receiver nearly made a touchdown catch in a recent preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. He ended up with a drop, which really angered him.
“I’m pissed,” Beckham said postgame, per SNY-TV. “This is the one that keeps me up at night, it’s a play that I know I can make — I don’t care if it was high or lower, it is on me.
“I feel like if the ball is anywhere near me, especially if it touches my fingertips, I’m supposed to come down with it — so that one right there is on nobody but me.”
New York has a preseason game remaining against the New York Jets. That contest is scheduled for Friday. Time will tell if a roster spot opens up for Beckham.
