Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle was involved in a penalty row after Liverpool snatched a last-gasp draw at St James’ Park.
Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai slammed home a 99th minute spot kick but Jaissle insisted referee Stuart Attwell should never have given the decision. Newcastle were denied a precious victory after Liverpool substitute Victor Munoz was brought down by Lewis Hall’s clumsy challenge.
Jaissle said: “For me, it was no penalty - it was a really soft one. If you give that, we will see many, many penalties. I don't think that Lewis can do anything else, he cannot just disappear on the field! It’s a really soft penalty. If you give these penalties then you have to give a lot in this season and I’m not sure if that’s good for football.”
Newcastle could have taken all three points as Liverpool striker Alexander Isak had a frustrating return to St James’ Park because his every touch was booed.
Jaissle praised Yoane Wissa but admitted the Newcastle striker could have won it. “It was an amazing performance - even if he could have killed the game! Their heads are a little down but we know we had many challenges, we're in a huge transition phase at the moment.”
The Newcastle boss also admitted he wants more signings after a summer of change at St James’ Park. He added: “I hope so, today the lads were amazing, a young squad but we have some needs we know internally and we keep that internally. You can count them on one hand.”
Liverpool hero Szoboszlai insisted they showed their spirit under new boss Andoni Iraola - even if he admitted he could not hear himself think when he took the penalty.

Szoboszlai said: “More than 50,000 fans in the stadium against you. You can't hear your own voice. That's why I love football and that's why I am doing it. We will never give up. I can guarantee you that. We have to fight every time - all day long for 90 minutes. Everybody who came off the bench also made an impact as well today. We need the whole squad and we need to be ready.”
Iraola admitted that Isak suffered amid the boos on his return but praised him and his team for carrying on fighting.
Iraola added: “I think he expected a little bit of the atmosphere. It’s not a big surprise for him, He has tried everything. He has given us good positions on the ball, probably has had a couple of situations to finish inside the box but probably not the clearest we wanted. But I value that he has continued pushing and fighting in the game and I think it was a good step for Alex.”
