Pat Riley celebrates Klay Thompson's arrival and how he fits into the Heat system image
Throughout the 2026 offseason, the main criticism of the Miami Heat has been their lack of shooting. By signing sharpshooters like Tim Hardaway Jr. and Klay Thompson, this Heat team has addressed those criticisms and is now ready to compete against the elite teams in the Eastern Conference.
Team president Pat Riley knew the primary problems, so he was patient in the market regarding the players he wanted to get for his roster. Now, he has a four-time champion on the roster, who is also one of the league's greatest-ever shooters to serve as the kickout target for Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Considering that Thompson is one of the most successful players of the past decade, it is fair to see that winning pedigree is a reason why people love this move. Thompson might be older now, but he is still one of the league's deadliest perimeter shooters.
Since most of the attention will be either on Antetokounmpo or Bam Adebayo, Thompson is back to his optimal role of being the sharpshooter in the corner or out on the wing. He thought he would get that on the Dallas Mavericks while playing alongside Luka Doncic, but that was before the blockbuster trade that sent him to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Now, Thompson has agreed to a buyout with the Mavericks, which means that he is free to join the Heat. Head coach Erik Spoelstra should be ecstatic about this signing because Thompson provides shooting, leadership, and a winning mentality to Miami. In fact, Riley is extremely excited about this arrival.
"Klay is one of the most iconic players to ever suit up in the NBA. A four-time battle-tested World Champion who will fit perfectly into his role as an all-around player at both ends of the court. We all talk about his shooting skill, but there is so much more he brings to the game. We are blessed that Klay chose the Heat in our quest to challenge for championships," Riley said about the Heat signing a four-time champion like Thompson.
With Riley showing this kind of love for a player, it is expected that he will be a big part of the 2026-27 season. The Heat are not seen as favorites because of the many moves Eastern Conference teams have made, but with Klay, the Heat could pull off some surprises.
