The Magpies were seconds away from clinching all three points in Matthias Jaissle’s first game in charge but had to settle for a point after a foul by Lewis Hall on Victor Munoz in the box saw Dominik Szoboszlai in the 99th minute.
Anthony Elanga put United in front just five minutes in before Cody Gakpo equalised early in the second half. However, the Reds were level for less than two minutes after Joe Willock scored immediately after coming on as a substitute.
The clock had just ticked over the five minutes of allocated stoppage time when referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot. Szoboszlai then left debutant Lukas Hornicek with no chance as he smashed the ball into the top left corner.
Bruno Guimaraes messages former NUFC teammates after Liverpool draw
Following Guimaraes’ departure earlier this month, Malick Thiaw took the armband in the absence of captain Dan Burn and vice-captain Joelinton. Thiaw partnered Sven Botman at centre-back, with Guimaraes messaging the pair on social media after the game.
Thiaw wrote: “The love from the Geordies tonight. 🖤🤍Wearing the armband at St. James’ Park one of the proudest moments of my time at this club.
“A performance we can built on💪🏾Thank you for the love, Geordies @nufc“.
Botman said: “Build on today’s performance and take the positives. See you Wednesday 🖤🤍“
Guimaraes was quick to show his support to his former teammates, replying “top 😍” to both posts.
Bruno Guimaraes injury blow just weeks after Newcastle United exit
Premier League champions Arsenal beat newly-promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates on Friday night but Guimaraes played no part because of a groin issue.
The Brazilian is also expected the Gunners’ next match away to Aston Villa but manager Mikel Arteta played down fears of it being a long-term issue.
“No, no, no,” Arteta said. “We expect that not to be weeks at all. Let's see how he evolves this week. He didn't even want to stop. He wanted to carry on.
“Now we start to understand the character of the player, but I don't expect that to be a big issue.”
