Manchester City central midfielder Nico Gonzalez is one player who has emerged as a target for Matthias Jaissle between now and the deadline.
The Magpies are said to have made contact with Enzo Maresca's side to explore a potential £34m deal to bring the Spaniard to St. James' Park this summer.
How Nico Gonzalez fits into Matthias Jaissle's side
Since signing for City in January 2025, the 24-year-old midfielder has scored four goals and provided no assists in 59 appearances in all competitions for the Premier League side.
His record with the Cityzens makes it clear that he would not arrive at St. James' Park as a Guimaraes-type midfielder who is likely to deliver goals and assists on a regular basis for Jaissle.
Instead, Gonzalez is a number six who likes to sit at the base of the midfield and dictate the tempo of matches with the ball at his feet, whilst also offering physicality and a shield in front of the backline.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are interested in a deal to sign Tottenham Hotspur central midfielder Archie Gray before the end of the summer transfer window.
The report claims that the Magpies have rekindled previous interest in the England U21 international and are now considering a swoop to sign him before the deadline.
It adds that they are looking at several options to bolster their midfield, including Gonzalez, and reveals that Spurs want a fee of at least £60m to tempt them into cashing in on the midfielder.

Gray would be an even better signing for the Magpies than Gonzalez if they can get both deals over the line, due to his potential, his versatility, and his leadership.
Despite being 20, he was picked to captain Spurs against Brentford on Saturday, even with Premier League and Champions League winning left-back Andy Robertson on the pitch.

The English youngster has shown versatility and leadership qualities that belay his years, playing 20 or more matches as a centre-back, defensive midfielder, central midfielder, and as a right-back in his career to date.
Gray has proven that he can be relied upon in a multitude of positions and roles on the pitch, having done so in the Championship, the Premier League, and the Europa League, whilst Gonzalez is an out-and-out number six who does not offer the same versatility.
The former Leeds youngster has captained Spurs and captained England at various youth levels, including the U21s, which suggests that he has the potential to go on and captain Newcastle in the future, making him a possible Guimaraes replacement.
Gray has also shown that he has the quality to make an impact at the top end of the pitch for his side, with two goals and two assists in 18 starts in the Premier League last season.

Meanwhile, Gonzalez, who is four years older than Gray, has not assisted a single competitive goal since December 2024 for Porto, and does not offer as much of a threat in possession.
Therefore, the Spurs youngster would be an even better signing for Newcastle because of his versatility, as he can fill in for a number of roles in the team, his leadership qualities that could see him become a future captain, and his potential to offer more quality on the ball.
